Anyone have problems conceiving dc 2?

Hi, I read that it can be more difficult conceiving dc 2 then dc 1. It took us 18 months for dd and I would like a 2 year gap for the next.

I just wondered if there is any truth in what I read or if dc 2 is easier to conceive. Thanks x

I conceived after 3 months with DS, but this time no luck after 8 months TTC.

But I have a friend who had to have IVF for DD 1, then conceived DD2 naturally a couple of years later...

Your body can change after the first pregnancy, and you never know whether it has until you are TTC again.

I conceived after 1 month with DS and have now been TTC for 5 months with no success.

I also planned to have a 2 year gap between children but the way it's going now that won't happen. I stupidly assumed that because we'd been so lucky the first time the second would be a breeze!

Same for us. DS1 was conceived the first time we even thought about trying. Ds2 took at least 6 months. I finally discovered that I ovulate very very early in the month. I found using an ovulation prediction kit quite useful in giving me a sense of knowing what we were doing

It took me 3 months with dd, and then 3 months second time which sadly ended in an ectopic. It has taken 18 months from the ectopic and I am now pg again.

Don't plan it will be so easy!
It took us 2 months with DS, a normal healthy pregnancy, and have been trying ttc for over one year now with 3 miscarriages along the way.

This is precisely what I'm worried about. I'm trying again next June and bit worried it'll take forever! Took 12 days with DS.

I don't think you can plan on anything. Took us 18 months to concieve DD and then 2 months (not trying that hard..) for DC2. Currently 14 wks pg with somewhat smaller gap than we planned.
Same thing has happened to several people I know and then on the flip side, other friends have found conceiving No 1 a real breeze and No2 much more difficult. Good luck. May as well go for it now!

I feel pg with DD after 4 months with DH, fell pg again 8 months later which ended in MC at 7 weeks. Fell pg with DS 4 years later although to be fair, we weren't trying on any of those occasions (both of my kids were pleasant surprises!) nor were we particularly careful.

i TTC for 10 cycles with DD and we are up to lucky number 10 again as of today() and still trying it is a myth that number 2 etc is easier to fall preg with than the first. i have had 2 MCs along the way this time round aswell so it has NOT been a walk in the park by any measure

i reckon if you ttc within a year or so of dc1 it makes a big difference to speed of conception

2 years / referrals / clomid for DD

being pregnant throws hormones up in the air, when you're no longer pregnant they land again any which way .. or so my consultant said hence my development of luteal phase defect

you need to chart .. first day period, date of ovulation, date of sex for at least 3 months to check your cycles

I'm almost identical to Suze25 except we've now been ttc for 8 months with a mc in March.

First time was so easy, we were naive in thinking second time would be the same.

Like Suze25, had hoped for 2 year gap. THat's well up the swanee now. Now i'd just like another child - gaps mean nothing

Hello there.

I just want to say how much I totally sympathise with everyone on this thread as I had a nightmare conceiving no2. I got really down about, which again doesn't help, but what can you do?

It took me 5 months (after mc) with ds1 - now
pg after 2 years of ttc with no2 (after IUI).

I blame:

1. My age - was 34 when ds born; now just turned 38. So no spring chicken and this is a factor.
2. Stress of work - tried to hack it in a very demanding full time job with small child and very little support - ended up exhausted, mental and throwing in the towel.
3. Anxiety of ttc - made everything a drama
4. dh had low-ish sperm count, though this didn't seem to matter the last time.

Had help from hospital - IUI and injections - not sure if this helped or whether it was me working less and dh giving up the booze (and giving the swimmers a fighting chance)

Having said this, a friend of mine took 4 years to conceive dd1 (with clomid) , who is now about 18 months.She is due a week after me (in Feb) and it was a complete accident.

Like Suze25 and RipVan I dearly wanted kids close together, but ds will be almost 4 when the new one arrives. He will be in school (ie no double whammy of nursery fees) and I don't have to buy a double buggy, so maybe every cloud has a silver lining.

I won't tell you to relax because that will make you all collectively want to punch me (if I had a pound etc etc) but it might be worth looking at you and your partner's lifestyles and also having a few tests done.

Thanks everyone. I am so sad to hear that some of you had mc's after your 1st pregnancies. I suppose people think that if it was ok the 1st time it will be again. Dd is 9 weeks old now. I think I will start when she is 6 months. I am not going to go back on the pill as I had planned as Im sure that didnt help when ttc dd.

I went on the (mini) pill about 6 weeks after giving birth.

I'm certainly not doing that again.

I think you've got enough crazy hormone stuff going on after pg without adding the pill into the mix.

I didn't want to try too soon after DS as I didn't think I would be able to cope with two children so small. However in hindsight I wish I'd started trying when he was 9 months old. He's now 18 months.

I'm 34 years old so my age isn't a great help. Another reason I should have started sooner rather than later.

As the months have gone by I've become more and more obsessed, and yes, I do know this isn't helpful. I gave up work to be with DS and suspect I have too much time on my hands. I will consider going to the doctor but I thought I would wait for 6 months first.

Suze-don't get too despondent- 5 months is really no time at all (althpugh I know it must seem like it because you were so quick firt time around)and 34 is NOT old! (I am nearly 39-yikes). Most women I know have taken a minimum of 6 months. One of the reason's I was glad it happened quickly for me this time is so that I didn't get obseessed by it like I did TTC DD. I told myself I wouldn't this time around but I knew I would have done. Good luck.

Took 2yrs for DS so decided to try a bit earlier than we planned to for DC2 incase it took as long. Fell pg 1st cycle but had m/c. Then fell pg first cycle after that and am now 12weeks

I conceived DS within three months of trying...now about to start ttc no 2 and this thread has stressed me out..am already worrying about secondary infertility due to em cs that I had with DS...

DH has warned me not to get obsessed and was all when I told him I when I would be ovulating....
