Hi all,

We are trying for another baby and this morning I did a test. It was negative. However when I went to throw it away, there was the most faint line - I had to hold it to the light but there it was! I have looked this up and says about evaporation lines. Has anyone else experienced this and had a positve test the next time? Fingers crossed! Thanks

What you saw was almost certainly an evaporation line - I've had this, and my period turned up a few hours later. This is why there's a time limit for reading the test.

Do another test in a couple of days time if you still think you could be pregnant.

Hi, I have to say i think it's good news! i have heard that you cannot get a false-positive i.e. if you have the hormone there it will show a line if not it won't, so a line is a line. The hormone 'clings' to the stuff on the stick so if there's not much there then it's probably that you don't have much of the hormone yet - in other words it's a bit early.

How long did you leave it before you threw it away?

When is your AF due?

I had a really faint line - as in you had to squint and hold it up to the window and now that 16 month old DD is snoozing upstairs! so we are proof that a faint line is still a BFP!

Do another one tomorrow first thing and see if it has gotten any darker.

Heebychick - it's possible to have a line on a stick if it's read after the allocated time limit. This is called an evaporation line, and are very common.

See this website www.peeonastick.com/falsepos.html

What kind of test was it? I've had loads of evaporation lines on ebay tests but my faint line on early response was a BFP. There are pictures on here.

That's why i asked how long she had left it.

All i'm saying is i had a positive experience, surely she'd want to hear both good and bad news.

psmith - it was a cheapie test but a sensitive one. 10iu/ml. Period still not materialised but not getting my hopes up again. Glad you had a positive experience - hope we do too!

I've had a few pregnancies start with VERY faint lines appearing after the time limit ... and I've had a few post-time-limit faint lines that were just evaps... so it's hard to say for sure!

For me, when I actually was pregnant, the first day the line appeared about 3 hours after the time limit, the second day it was about an hour after the time limit, the 3rd day was at the 10 min mark and the following day was within 3 mins. So, keep testing and you should hopefully start to see a difference!!

Same thing happened to me with a cheap test kit. Checked a bit later (only about 10/15 mins prob), very faint line. No period a few days later so did a mmore expensive test and was a very definate positive result!

The thing is, I have never seen an evaporation line and now I have seen two (did another test this afternoon as period still not arrived). I think I am just kidding myself and getting my hopes up. The second one was an expensive test and the line is much more clear though.

Did you read it in the suggested timeframe?

I think you are pregnant, if you followed the instructions there is no reason for it to be wrong. And if no AF - surely this means good news!??

Hi all, still no period. Do I do another test? What would you al do? Just wait and see if period comes?

I did 2 tests and got very faint lines. DP made me get a Clearblue digital. In his words 'it says pregnant or not pregnant, you cant read that wrong'. Very true.

when are you due your AF ?? How many days late are you ?

Report
Hunnie · 21/07/2008 20:01

Sorry to sound ignorant, welshlinz, but what is AF? I am new on here and not quite sure of all the abbreviations. I am two days later for my period. Long time for me. Although in February was early and March early April late only one day. Due to stress I was told by doctor. Last two months on time - 28 day cycle. Now this again.

Hi Hunnie an AF is Aunt Flo as in period, i wasn't sure of the abbreviations but i think i've guessed most of them now!

Are you having any symptoms?

I think in a day or two, get a good, reputable test and do it first thing in the morning.

Then if you are sure you are pregnant maybe speak to a Dr to make sure things are developing well - the Hormones should be doubling (apprx.) each day so the line should (in theory) get stronger each day.

I had a ridiculously faint line with DD2. Phoned the test company's helpline, who said if there was any line at all, then it's positive. It was so faint that at first I thought it was blank.
Good luck.

I had a very faint line appear after picking up my test to through away 3 hours after peeing on it! And I now have 12 week old upstairs in bed. Sounds positive to me.

I agree with MelT76 buy adigital clearblue test which spells it out for you no mistaking it then.

Let us know x

I had such a faint line on my test, that I didn't really think it was there - hard to decide if I was imagining it. But baby Tim is now 15 months.

Good luck

I can't believe this is so common! Heebychick, that makes sense what you say. Sat test was so faint hardly noticed at first. Yesterday was bit clearer and just did one ten mins ago; the faintest line appeared within the first minute so I know isn't an evaporation line. Am excited now, but know from experience things don't always work out, but so hard not to get hopes up. I have never had a line before when it has been negative; an evaporation line. Never even heard of them til Sat. Aunt Flo! That's great !. Still not au fait with all the other abbrevs but daresay I will pick them up. Hopefully like bluesky and humphries and saggers, mine will be positive. x
