Cervical erosion and hospital treatment - help!!

Hi everyone,

Been TTC for a few months and because of increased DTD I've started to bleed a little after sex. Saw the GP who referred me to hospital - I have a cervical erosion but she wanted to get me checked as it's not caused any symptoms for years.

I had my appointment today and told the nurse very clearly I didn't want any cautery. She said she'd have to do if she took a biopsy which I thought meant just in the 1 tiny spot after the biopsy. However she went and put silver nitrate all over my cervix! I absolutely did not consent to this.

I've been crying all evening as now I'm convinced this will dry up my CM. I can't find much help on google so wondering if anyone else had this done and what effect it had? I've been trying really hard with EPO and grapefruit juice so feel really really sad and emotional right now that this was done and may ruin my chances Sad please, any positive stories?

Hi OP,

I’m so sorry I had a long message written out but it’s disappeared! The short version - I’ve had similar (and more intensive) treatment lots of times, and am sitting playing with my 8 month old, who was conceived shortly after biopsies and nitrate (within weeks). So please don’t stress too much.

Short message as wee one not loving the phone, but didn’t want to read and run x

@MissingCoffeeandWine thank you so much for replying, that does make me feel a lot better! It's so easy to stress with this stuff Blush I know I'm probably being silly but it's hard when no one to talk to IRL!

Hi! I had this done several years ago, I got pregnant first time trying with my DD. I didn’t find it dried up my CM, it stopped the bleeding I was constantly getting so I was happy! I was worried about wether it would have an impact when I tried to conceive too!

I had it done as well as a LLETZ procedure for precancerous cells, all before my pregnancy. This pregnancy was a one-hit wonder as well (I know, as it was the ONLY time contraception wasn't used!), oh, and I was 40. So, all in all, odds stacked against me, healthy baby boy and no drama.

I'm so sorry things weren't explained better to you and with kindness and respect. The term erosion is completely out of date.
The proper term is Ectropian which is where the cells from inside the cervical canal (passage from the cervix to the womb) are slightly on the outside where they can be seen during a vaginal examination with a speculum. Usually pink, perhaps that's where the term erosion came from? This often causes some bleeding after sex. It's not related to cancer or fertility in any way and is very common. I'm glad you are reassured by the helpful and warm responses.

Thank you everyone! Smile sooo reassuring the hear that the treatment had no effect on future fertility and CM - this is what was worrying me, more than the erosion/ectropion itself! I feel much calmer now.

I wonder if you might have hard treatment for precancerous cells (found on smear) can affect fertility? That's a different ballgame. Cautery to the cervix equals no drama, but actually procedures to cut off the head of the cervix can head to difficulties carrying the baby full term. But all they do for that is a cervical cerclage (stitch) which does the job nicely. So even that is okay, but you haven't had that done so it's irrelevant (other than to explain you may be thinking of this when you think of anything else to do with the cervix).
