It doesn't matter when your last period was. Pregnancy starts when you ovulate and that egg is fertilised. Two women might have had a period starting on 11th May and ovulate on completely different dates. Their pregnancies will have started on different dates.

When did you get a positive pregnancy test and why were you being scanned?

Was it a strong positive on the 11th?

I think with the amount of time between testing positive and the scan and assuming a regular cycle, there are early indications that the pregnancy may not be developing as expected. A 10mm gestational sac wouldn't usually be empty. However, I've recently supported a friend through a scan at what should have been 6 weeks where there was no baby, no yolk sac or pole, only a gestational sac and when she was rescanned, everything was as expected. She's 17 weeks now with no further issues.

So, all you can do is wait for a rescan and hope for good news.

This happened to me. I normally have 34 day cycles. Tested negative on day 35 but got a faint positive after feeling unwell on day 45! Doctor said I ovulated 2 weeks later than normal and had I not conceived I would have had nearly a 50 day cycle (which I have never had before). All is going well so far and I am now just over 11 weeks.

Sorry, I should have said I don’t know how common it is. My doctor didn’t seem very concerned.

@Nephele
Thankyou for reply
I'm also irregular in my cycle but just the thought that 10mm gestational with no yolk seen is making me thoughtful
Just want a some good examples of this kind of situation so it put me at ease for 2 week until my next appointment

Those are pretty strong positives.

I asked about irregular cycles because I was wondering if you were testing because your period was late. With an irregular cycle, sometimes its a bit harder to predict when you ovulate, hence testing can happen at varied times.

The very earliest you'd test positive would be around 9 or 10 days after ovulation so I'd estimate that you should be at least 5 weeks pregnant and the size of the gestational sac is about right for 5 and a half weeks ish in my experience. Scanning at 5 weeks is difficult because sometimes it answers no questions and you simply have to wait for things to develop.

Early scans can go both ways. It's happened to me and I've had a healthy pregnancy but I've also been in the situation where things didn't progress.

My friend went for her 12 week scan and was told she was only 10 weeks so had to go back again two weeks later. All was fine.
