Bleeding and low HCG levels?

Picklee08 · 20/09/2019 17:38

First time posting on here, just need some advice and to hear other peoples experiences.
I found out I was 4 weeks pregnant but had very faint lines on HPT. Went to the doctors, got referred for bloods to check HCG levels which came back as 31.
I'm 6 weeks pregnant today and was sent to early pregnancy unit due to light bleeding which has got slightly heavier overnight, almost like a period. I had internet examination which confirmed my womb is still closed so that's a good sign but was told threatened miscarriage. I had bloods done again to check if HCG has increased over 7 days and it's now at 138. They want to repeat bloods in 48 hours so see if it's increasing or decreasing but I'm worried sick :( Has anybody else been in my situation and has gone on to have successful pregnancies?
Thanks Halo

I've had this but mine was a miscarriage. That being said, if your hcg levels are going up (doubling) then that's a good sign. It's when they're not that there's an issue! Mine went down completely so I wouldn't worry too much. Congrats and fingers crossed for a healthy 9 months💕

Unfortunately I would say it's bad news sorry OP - hcg should be much much higher by 6 weeks - like in the region of 10,000 plus x

Hi OP,

I had a similar experience earlier this year, Faint BFP, low rising hcg, etc

I was told at my appointments that hcg should double every 48 hours (at least) and more likely rises quite rapidly in early pregnancy.

But during that time I also read lots of stories on here of similar concerns with women who went on to have successful pregnancies.

I've everything crossed for you. Lots of love and luck.

Yes unfortunately with such a small increase in 7 days I would be pretty confident that the pregnancy isn’t viable and will likely be bad news. Your levels should be in the thousands at 6 weeks. Such a horrible thing to hear and I am so so sorry x

I don't think this is the one OP, sorry Thanks

Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply. The bleeding has calmed down a bit today so hopefully will stop soon. I spoke to a nurse from EPU and she told me the actual numbers don't matter, it's how much it's increasing that matters so hoping and praying it's gone up when i have another blood test done tomorrow. Will post update.

UPDATE
Got my bloods back today, HCG has gone from 138 to 273 in two days so they have doubled! Very surprised and happy, just waiting to see what the next plan of action is! Grin

Maybe you're not quite as far along as thought? (Late implantation/ovulation etc)
Fingers crossed for you. And I hope they keep a close eye x

It isn't the actual numbers which matter but the rate at which they double.

I wouldn't worry about the figures themselves but I would worry about the bleeding.

However, if the bleeding stops and the numbers continue to double exponentially, things could be absolutely fine.

Good luck OP. Hope it is okay.

Hi @TheMustressMhor,
The bleeding is barley anything today but i do notice that I seem to bleed bright red blood whenever I do anything physical? I've kept a sanitary towel on all night just to be safe, woke up this morning to no blood at all, went to the toilet and when i wiped it was kinda just brown and watery.
However when I was hoovering, bending down picking things up, i got bright red blood come out and then stop when I relaxed? Very strange.

In all honesty I'd keep To light work only, nothing physical and just try to rest as much as you can - I had low progesterone (I actually had HCG injections in the first trimester with two pregnancies, 1 successful) and my miscarriage obstetrician consultant told me to keep things to light work, don't fly or do anything strenuous - mot sure if it helps but I guess it helps to not be bouncing around if possible
Good luck! Good news your HCG has doubled too - perhaps ask about HCG injections ?

@custardbear Thank you for your advice. I didn't know about HCG injections? What were you levels and did you have to ask for them? Did they help higher your HCG?

Hi @Picklee08 - they didn't do my bloods actually, not sure why? I'd had my hormone bloods done throughout my cycle previously (not exactly a good guesstimate if what's going on to be honest) and they were showing slightly lower progesterone than normal and gynaecologist thought it may be why I was t maintaining a pregnancy - so my other consultant, after I'd had multiple miscarriages, suggested HCG jabs - so had these weekly til week 12 along with scans

When is your next blood test Picklee08?

I hope the bleeding slows down. It is just more obvious when you exert yourself because it's pooling inside you.

The same thing can be seen when we have heavy periods. No bleeding when we're resting but when we do anything like hoovering.

Do you still have symptoms of pregnancy?

I haven't got another blood test booked, but my scan has been moved forward to Monday now so will be a lot clearer what is actually happening. I haven't had any blood today thankfully, more like little bits of brown/redish discharge. The only pregnancy symptoms I've got is sore and tender boobs, and feeling tired. Haven't got the "Morning sickness" yet. Haven't had any cramping or pain so I guess that's a good thing. I just don't know what this discharge is about?

Hi everybody, apologises for a late reply, it's been a tough time and still not over yet. I stayed in hosptial last week for one night as I was having pains in my lower tummy, mainly right side. Had 3 internal scans which showed a tiny dot in my womb but HCG was not improving or doubling at all only going up very slowly so they assumed start of a miscarridge. They told me I had to have a vaccum aspiration procedure done to remove the tissue so I had that under local annesthetic and oh my goodness, it was the worst pain i have ever been in my life, even worse than recovering from my c-section in my previous pregnancy! Anyway, Doctor got some tissue but not as much as she expected and wasn't convinced that the amount would cause that level of hormone, so went back for more bloods 2 days later, HCG was still going up. So it was confirmed ectopic but they could not see where the baby is. I have now been put on methotrexate to kill the cells. Got more bloods next Thursday to confirm the pregnancy has gone. It's been such an emotional, heartbreaking and scary time so far and is still not over. I hate to think that it's put me off trying again but I think it has :( Thank you for asking how I am, just cannot wait for this nightmare to be over.

That's a lovely update! I've got a suspected ectopic and am waiting for the miscarriage to start. Your post gives me a little hope that I'll get some good news later this year. All the best!
