Thought I had AF but this...

Hi all
DH and I started TTC last month. I’m pretty sensitive to hormones so thought I knew when I was ovulating etc. Did HPTs early and had one faint line on a clear blue but very quickly put that down as an evap line due to other BFNs and AF (?) arrived last week.

However AF has been considerably lighter and shorter than normal (but by no means just spotting). Put it down to having had my IUD out. However my boobs still feel sore, when they usually go back to normal at end of AF so I took another test (Boots) this evening out of curiosity and got what looks like a positive within 2 minutes. Really surprised but now also hopeful! I’m going to take another test in the morning.

Anyone else have a lighter ‘period’ not just spotting and go onto have BFP?

That's a BFP! Congratulations

Thank you.
Tested this morning and yep, that definitely was a BFP. Equally excited and worried due to the 6 day bleed. Going to call GP shortly.

Yes I have had something similar this month, I'm currently having blood hCG levels 48 hours apart to see if it's rising as expected with a normal pregnancy. Unfortunately my first hCG was only 27 so I'm not feeling hopeful. I think it's a good idea to get in touch with your GP - it may have been just an implantation bleed but my GP is concerned I may go on to miscarry or that this may turn out to be an ectopic. Sorry to put a downer on things - and hope yours turns out to be an implantation bleed with a nice healthy bean.

Sorry to hear you’re going through this. Sending lots of positive thoughts to you. Thank you for sharing as it is really helpful for me to hear. Will phone gp when they open.

Just a quick update. Went to EPU and was scanned but the results were inconclusive. They could see a corpus luteum and potentially something on my lining but too small to tell. They kindly explained to me that I may have had an early mc (most likely), or perhaps I ovulated a lot later / late implantation (less likely), and they can’t rule out ectopic as would be too small to see at this stage. So I’ve had blood tests and waiting on results today. Feeling ok if it wasn’t meant to be this month but confused that I had a BFN the day prior to bleed but strong positive after bleed. The mysteries of the female body.

Hi @Lexemy thanks for the update. It's so strange I am going through the exact same thing. I haven't been scanned yet but waiting for my second hcg blood result today, after which I'm going to ask for a scan. Let's keep each other updated in what's going on!

Sorry to hear it’s worrying time for you. Would u mind saying what your period was like? You said more than spotting? Thanks

@strawberrye Yes, definitely. It’s really reassuring to know there’s someone in the same position. Fingers crossed for you.

@mrsjones17
I bled brown/red blood for 3 days but lighter than my normal period (which is usually a horror show). Before it was pink and after brown spotting, I think. I just thought I was having a lighter period as IUD came out the month before.

@Lexemy my second hcg was 31, having been 27. Not consistent with a healthy pregnancy, more likely an ectopic but too low to see anything on a scan. I have to wait a week for repeat hCG to see what is happening. Hope you have got better news than me x

Hi @strawberrye

Very sorry for such a late reply. Sorry to hear you’re in the waiting game. I am also a bit too.

My hcg came back consistent with me being a week behind. It has risen well in 36 hours but progesterone dipped slightly. So I’m still pregnant but it’s anything of: failing pregnancy, ectopic or being behind with dates. I have to go back for repeat bloods on Wednesday unless I get any pain.

Waiting is hard, isn’t it?

Fingers crossed for you OP. I’m afraid to tell you I experienced something very similar with my first pregnancy and did go on to have a m/c. Thought my period had started but it was v light so I tested after a few days and got a faint positive. I did have some symptoms but kept having brownish, bloody discharge. Was assured by GP that there was nothing to worry about but went on to miscarry, although not till 11 weeks. I wish I’d had an early scan but it was a long time ago now and early scans weren’t so commonly offered then. Paid for a private one in a subsequent pregnancy. Hope it turns out OK for you.

@jellycat sorry to hear this. Thank you for sharing with me. Do you mind me asking if they did any blood work with you on that first one?

Hi @Lexemy, no, there weren’t any tests done apart from checking to see if I was Rh- (I was, and was given anti-D). I was just sent home. I did get pregnant again fairly quickly and everything went well with that one 🙂. How are things going for you?

Just realised you probably wanted to know if I had tests to see if my hormone levels were increasing as they should have been. I wasn’t offered any tests like that. As I say, it was quite a long time ago now and my GP just dismissed my concerns at the time. I was proved right but I’ve read about other people who’ve had similar symptoms and gone on to have a successful pregnancy.

@jellycat
Yes, that's what I was wondering. Thank you. Please it happened fairly quickly for you afterwards.

I've had a really up and down couple of days, coupled with a cold that's left me just wanting to sleep but unable to sleep. I went to A&E yesterday as I had some pinching, predominantly on left side but also a little on the right. They did my bloods and a manual exam. My HCG had almost trebled from Friday and the doctor's view is that the corpus lute was giving me discomfort. I'm someone who can normally feel ovulation so she said I'd definitely feel this. Her impression is that it's not ectopic and my bloods are rising well so hopefully I was a week behind and the prior bleed may have been late (and heavy) implantation. EPU now want to see me again tomorrow for an assessment. I'm still a pregnancy of unknown location until it's visualised. I'm crossing my fingers and toes!

Update.

Had my second scan today and good news. The little bean is where it should be and measuring 4-5 weeks rather than 5-6 where they thought I was last week. Fits with my irregular cycles and may have taken longer time to travel down and implant. The bleeding could have been either heavier implantation or my body had not yet had the signal to stop. I've been told my chance of miscarriage is now the same as the general population so I'll be cautiously optimistic until we hear the heart beat etc a bit later on. Smile

Thank you for the support.

Congratulations Lexemy and great news about the scan.

It's so nerve wracking when the pregnancy starts out like this, but I hope it continues healthily. Keep us updated. Are they planning on doing another early scan in a week or two or is that it until the 12 week scan?

@knitkitty I’ve been booked for another scan in 2 weeks. Now I need to learn patience and try to relax.
