Hey,

I’m scheduled to have my teeth out in the next few months and as they are impacted with cysts I’m told part of my jaw with either be broken or have some of the bone removed.

I’m having 3 out of the 4 teeth removed. Has anyone had this done? How was the pain/swelling after?

I had 3 out. One or two were impacted. It wasn’t nice and I ended up with antibiotics. But it wasn’t totally unbearable.

Thanks, was the swelling bad? My consultant said I will need 1-2 weeks off from work, I work on the phones in a contact centre so I’m not sure whether this will be enough. I know I just need to take it Day by day but just wanted to give my boss a heads up. He’s quite happy to give me the 2 weeks off

@bigpizza I had two impacted removed two weeks ago, not as complex as yours sounds though.
I was terrified of having it done/dry socket/infection but all was fine, keep dosed up on painkillers andwell hydrated and you will be okay. Do be prepared with soft food fod at least a week.
Worse part for me was the hangover of general anaesthetic.
Good luck x

Makes me feel better both of you have said it isn’t as bad as I’m probably expecting! Yes I’ll make sure I have a cupboard full of pain relief, think they said they would give me some to come home with but I may have misheard. Thanks! X

Take the pain relief. All the pain relief.

And soft food.

Your face will be swollen for a few days but honestly it’s ok. It’s not nice but it’s ok

I had all four removed as a teenager. I looked like a chipmunk for several weeks. Probably 2??

The drugs were helpful.

Sorry for the late reply, I have my date it’s next week, getting nervous now haha!

Do they prescribe pain meds’ or is it just the usual over the counter stuff?

I had all 4 removed, looked like a hamster afterwards, had strong painkillers. Took about 5 days for the swelling to subside.

I had all four removed in hospital less than a year ago.

Surgery was fine but recovery (Sorry!) was horrible.

I was in so much pain even after a week - I couldn't sleep due to swelling 😞 and was quite bruised on my face from having mouth clamped open during surgery.

I had three weeks off work in the end but it was directly on the back of my maternity leave so I needed to be 100% to return to work as had a lot to take in after being away.

Took months for the holes to eventually close up afterwards in my gums.

It was not nice but completely worth it as havnt had any tooth infections is great.

@Bigpizzalover I had my bottom ones removed over a year ago. The pain was manageable for me, I took a week and a half off work due to swelling really. I just took ibuprofen for the week and codeine for the first few days, think I slept it off mostly.

I had all 4 out in hospital as lower 2 were impacted. Painkillers and a bit of soreness but I don't recall too much pain and only light bruising. Hope it goes well

Try not to worry. I think they tell you the worst case scenario. They told me the same about time off work and broken jaw etc.

Had mine out under GA on a Fri. Discharged 2 hrs later! Pain far less than when they were infected. No jaw breaking but I had a stiff neck where presumably they had had to really pull to get them out (impacted). Sore nose from blood (like if you get water up your nose).

Anyway, bit woozy over the weekend. The mon was a bank holiday and I was back in on a tues. I was convinced I was going to die in surgery Hmm But honestly it was totally fine!

Best wishes to you x

Oh sorry forgot to say, not much swelling at all. Far less than when infected. No visible bruising.

Gah sorry that was meant to say back in work on tues!

I had mine out 2 weeks ago. They were impacted wisdom teeth and I was in more more pain after than I expected.
Nothing horrific but thought I’d be back at work 2 days later but actually needed a week off.

I had this done. All four out and part of jaw. All fine and healed within 2 weeks.

I had all 4 of mine done at once. Getting over the GA took a few days and I was a bit sore and pretty swollen, but it didn't last more than a week/10 days. The bruising on my jaw took a while to fade.

Good luck OP!

I had all 4 of mine removed under GA about 20 years ago. I was pretty swollen afterwards had two black eyes and a very large incision from my lip to the back of my mouth.

First week was v sore and after that just got incrementally better.

My last memory is the hospital bringing me a cheese sandwich for lunch the next day- I couldn't open my mouth!

I am grateful I had them removed Under GA, my recovery was quick and uneventful.

I remember that the pain killers sent me to sleep ! I've never slept so much, and had lots of liquid to keep me going. Oh and I ate the stitches accidentally!

I had four out in one go. Gen anesthesia. Percocet after. Someone else drove me home afterwards. So long as you have pain meds and someone nearby to look in afterwards for a day or so & u will do fine

Sorry again for the late replies! Work and children have kept me busy! Thanks for taking the time to reply, the ones I am having removed are impacted and one of them has a cyst underneath so they have mentioned breaking/removing part of the jaw.

Work are giving me 2 weeks off so hopefully going by replies this will be enough time to heal. Partner has the day after my surgery off and then weekend then I am on my own from the Monday with 2 kids under 4 so I’m hoping I can get the pain under control in a couple of days.

I’ve read about dry socket, so I have stopped smoking this weekend gone to hopefully minimise my risk of getting it.

I am also having GA so at least I won’t be able to see/hear what they are doing, I suppose that’s a bit of a silver lining
