Is anyone trying to lose weight before getting pregnant?

I'm 31, desperate to ttc number 2 but am overweight (bmi 30.1 at the moment). I have lost 26lbs so far but would ideally lose another 2 - 2.5st before we ttc another.

I'm so broody and cross at myself that I have put myself in this position. I have set myself a goal of start of June, but that is 3 months away and not sure I could lose that much weight in that time. But hopefully I will be a lot closer to a healthy weight by then and will continue to diet until I get a bfp.

I don't want to wait much longer as who knows how long it will take (I had 2mcs before my ds).

Is anyone else in a similar position? It would be nice to talk to someone in the same boat Smile

I am trying to lose weight (LCHF, and limiting cal to 1500/day) and might be in the early stages of pregnancy now. We DTD during ovulation and now in 2WW. BMI is 35.5 (!!).

I've lost about 4kg in a couple of weeks, and am planning on continuing the diet for a total of three months and moving onto plain calorie counting and reintroducing carbs at a lower level to before.

I've been reading that LCHF won't harm a foetus, but I know it's not ideal for my own body long term.

If indeed I am pregnant, I actually hope to continue losing weight throughout the pregnancy and end up lighter than when I started :)

I want to lose weight before ttc, need to lose 2 stone but I just haven't managed it and I have just decided to start trying now. I can't wait much longer as I am 37 and have had problems in the past. I have decided to start slimming world on Monday as you can do that while pregnant so will stick to that alongside ttc

Hi all, I'm trying to lose weight before ttc too - around 2 stone. It comes off so slowly with me that I've only lost 3.5 lbs so far on slimming world. Got weighed this week & put weight on but I knew I would have after not sticking to it for the last 2 weeks. Time to give myself a kick up the backside & focus as I have a fantastic reason to motivate me!

I'm 31 & desperate to start trying for our 1st now but I know if something went wrong I'd always think it was because I was overweight. I'm going on holiday in 9 weeks & have set myself a goal of losing 1-2 lbs per week which would take me close to 1 stone which is half way there. We've said to start properly ttc in July so I've got a couple of months to get myself sorted.

Good luck everyone!

It is good to hear from others in similar situations. I think you have to weigh up (no pun intended!) whether it's sensible to wait or not. For me, I probably should wait until at least June as it will mean I will hopefully be on mat leave when my ds starts school. But then there is part of me that just wants to get on with ttc now. It's so frustrating how long it takes to lose, especially if you have weeks where you don't lose and there is no reason for it!
Well in three months I'm going to go for it no matter what, even half a stone a month will take me to 10lbs over healthy weight which I think I will be ok with.

Well, I spoke way too soon - pretty sure I'm not pregnant this time!

Which means for us that we will be waiting at least 2-3 months because I don't want a baby born in Dec/Jan if we can plan it otherwise.

But it gives me a good chance to get on with the weight loss.

Went for a brisk walk this afternoon; I'm trying to do at least some exercise every day. Planning and tracking in MFP has made a huge difference, it feels good to add it all in and see the difference the extra movement is making.

That's a shame kp86 can I ask why you don't want to have a baby born in dec/jan? Just curious

I have got a fitbit and plan to get back to using that this week. Ds's nursery is a 25 min walk each way and the weather is meant to be dry all week so I am planning on walking to pick him up every day. Last time I wore it to work I walked 10k during my shift!

Don't want a baby born close to Christmas, is all. Future birthdays and everything.

So the latest I would hope for (knowing it doesn't always go the way you want!) is late Oct.

How's everyone doing today?

10 days in, and I'm resisting the urge to weigh myself to see if it's all worthwhile. I will wait for a couple more days, especially since it's TTOM.

Hard to say whether any loss is due to LCHF or just cutting calories. I guess both in combo is a good way of thinking!

notasillysausage · 21/02/2016 19:43

I'm doing ok. I've been on the diet since Christmas and had my first blip yesterday. I'm doing weight watchers (on my own - not paying for meetings) so still within weekly points but ate more than I usually would.

Sorry you had no luck this month kp. I'm desperate to start trying but will hold off until June! The next few months will go very quickly I'm sure.

I have fell off the wagon a bit today, had a birthday party to go to. I am joining slimming world on line tonight and planning my food for the week. Working all day tomorrow and have my food all planned for then, I am always ok in work it's when I am off I struggle.

Took DS swimming this afternoon. Making a real effort to be active for at least 30 mins each day, preferably more.

Walking instead of driving, finding activities which mean I need to walk there and back or walking while there (eg. going to an English Heritage site). Need to work on getting my heart rate up more and then some strength exercises to help with tone, but I hope once I feel a bit more fit I will be more inclined to look at strength.

I read on here (though obviously seek your own medical advice from GP) that if you followed Slimming World or Weight Watchers the pounds will drop off, but it's also a diet you could continue whilst pregnant.

Mrsmulder · 21/02/2016 20:39

As far as I know it's slimming world you can continue on while pregnant, not weight watchers so that's one reason why I am switching. I also found that I ate a lot more fruit and veg on slimming world so think it's generally more healthy

Hi, I'm aiming to lose 2 stone as me & my partner want to start ttc for DC2 end of August so that's 1lb a week (doable I think!!).
My BMI is currently 32.4 so it will take me down to 27.9 which still isn't great but he is 42 and doesn't want to have a baby in his late 40s. It's hard work so I understand why, riddiculously tiring having a newborn. I'm so impatient and would love to start now but I know it's not a good idea while obese!
I've lost 7lbs so far but feeling really overwhelmed as I have an amazing reason to lose weight but I can't find the motivation.
Are any of you exercising? I have bootcamp Friday nights and kettlebells Wednesday nights. Trying to walk more too but the weather is just rubbish, can't wait until the summer.
Good luck everyone Flowers no Chocolate Cake for us Wink

You can definitely do slimming world while pregnant with your midwife's approval.

Cestlavie, I feel exactly the same at the moment - have a fantastic reason to do it but can't get into the groove. I'm really feeling a bit down at the moment I think which isn't helping. Just feels like everything is so far away at the moment. Sorry - don't mean to be down!

Well, hello there ladies :)

Another active day, DH had the day off so we went up to London and spent a few hours doing touristy stuff. Total of about four hours of walking for the day, which is good. Not huffing and puffing walking but I figure any activity is better than me sitting most of the day like I do at home with DS (yes, we go out almost every day, but when I'm at home and not doing some sort of chore I am Velcro-ed to the couch).

I've only lost about 3kg (half a stone) in two weeks, and most of that was in the first few days, so I'll wait and se what it's like at the end of this week and I may need to rethink LCHF as a diet for me, and go back to plain ol' calorie counting.

Hey I've lost 10lb in last 5 weeks using my fitness pal app & the Nhs couch to 5k app.

It's really good & not too difficult to stick too xx

natalie don't apologise for being down. It's so hard being broody but knowing you need to wait. But June isn't that long & you can still continue to lose weight healthily in pregnancy or at least maintain if you're overweight. I put on 2 2/2 stone plus 1 stone of Christmas weight before I got pregnant (wasn't planned) & basically ate like a pig. I wouldn't advise it Wink

KP walking is good! I'm going for a long walk tomorrow with a friend & our DCs as we are both in the same boat but I'm not fit enough to do loads of high intensity exercise at the mo! 3kg is really good. I'm calorie counting too as SW/WW don't work for me. SW is amazing but I don't have the patience or time to cook from scratch!

nish How are you getting on with couch to 5k? I keep meaning to start it but I can't get motivated to go out in the cold just yet. Really want to start running again though as the lbs drop off but it's so hard! I was so slim a couple of years ago (even though I still thought I was fat Hmm) so now I feel like I'm a beached whale Blush

I've had a bad day today, crisps & sweets galore but DH has made a lovely curry for tea so I'm going to enjoy it & write it off as a bad day. My weigh day is Saturday so I need to lose 1lb by then. I can do this!!

I also want to do C25K, but so hard with DH out of the house 11 hours a day Mon-Fri then I work on the weekend. Excuses, excuses, I know, but the park where I would go is a little dangerous-feeling (probably fine, really) at night so I don't feel comfortable going there until daylight hours are longer.

DS still sleeps for 2hr/day so maybe I could look into YouTube and do an aerobics video while he is down.

A treadmill would be pretty awesome but I reckon it would turn into a clotheshorse pretty soon and we just don't have the space. Two bed flat with two adults and a toddler doesn't leave much spare room!

nishp13 · 22/02/2016 21:27

Hi CestLeVie I purchased a treadmill so haven't ventured outside but it's been really good. Before I started I did no exercise at all & my job is office based so not much movement there.

I've found it tough at the beginning & occasionally have to talk to myself to keep me motivated but it's a great feeling of accomplishment afterwards. It's very rewarding.

I was a size 8-10 & over 4 years creeped upto 16. Now on a mission ;)

KP I've heard great things about the 30 day shred. We are in the process of buying a house so once that's through I'm looking at getting more active at home (currently live with DP/DS plus DM/DF and 2 bloody dogs so never get a moments peace).
Could you join a local leisure centre and pop in the evenings? Cheaper than a fancy gym but has all the necessary equipment IMO. But then some expensive gyms have onsite crèches for the DCs so depends if you could get childcare I suppose!

nish glad to hear it's going well. I've got a 10k run in June & I don't know how I'm going to cope but it's only a cancer research one so I can at least walk if need be...
I was a size 10 but I'm now a 16/18. It's shocking because I don't 'feel' that big but when I look in the mirror I get a surprise Grin I won't be able to get down to that again before ttc but once I've done having children I've told DH he can buy me a tummy tuck & boob job for my incubation services Envy.

So lovely to talk to people in the same boat though. I dread being high risk due to weight as didn't have the best labour last time so want to be as fit as poss for any future DC's!

I think I have a menu from a friend for a 30 day shred (or similar).

Jumped on the scales this morning and I'm down another 1.6kg so something is working. Approx 4.7kg (I'm not 100% sure of starting weight) in two weeks.

Had a pretty quiet day, I was super tired after having a late night last night. Ended up napping for an hour or so while DS was sleeping!

I've maxed out my calories for the day, but that's ok. Had a nice ganache dessert after dinner of 85% choc and a 1/4 cup of double cream melted together.

Tomorrow is DH's birthday, so I'm going to try to stay healthy-ish, but am having a cake for dessert so low carb will not happen. But I'm letting myself have one sensible treat day/week.

How's everyone doing? I've eaten a bit better today so am in better spirits. Feel huge at the moment so really need to crack on with it - always been on the big side but am a good size 16 now & getting to the point where my clothes are starting to get a bit tight Shock

Meals planned for this week just got to work on not snacking on bad things! Hope everyone is doing well :)

It was DH's birthday today and so I mostly ignored my diet. I made cupcakes with buttercream and had a mars bar.

But I have to say - I didn't enjoy the sugar! I can't believe it. I've gone from being addicted to the stuff to feeling ill after having buttercream icing in only two weeks.

Fingers crossed I don't regain everything in one day ;) doubt it, but knowing my luck...

I plan on restricting to 1000cal instead of 1500 for the rest of the week to make up for today.

Good that you're not enjoying the sugar, it gives me hope as I'm so hopelessly addicted to the stuff!

Watching one born every minute getting stupidly broody!
