Is it a line? Even if it is, is it just the drugs?

Hiya,
Apologies for long post- bit of background....

Long time lurker here- long as in been ttc (and lurking) since coming off evil pill in January with no success and very irregular periods (if you can even call them that- usually just brown spotting! Tmi sorry!).

So this is my first post because as the year went on I had to ban myself from coming on here as combined with the current baby boom at work and amongst friends it was more than I could handle to keep reading about symptoms then imagining them and then being soooo disappointed constantly! Currently awaiting to go in for day 2-4 and day 21 bloods as consultant said she thinks I don't ovulate Sad!

But.... it is works Christmas do tomorrow and it's been a while since I've seen a period so I bought to make 100% sure I'm ok to drink I'll poas- fully expecting the usually lonely single line! But could anyone have a look at the pic and tell me what they see? My (crazy ever hopeful) eyes see a shadowy second line which I've never imagined before but I've always though when the day comes for a bfp it would be really obvious so I'm going with 'no keep dreaming' but thoughts would be appreciated!

Now the second conundrum is even if it might be a bfp how much can I accept it seeing as I have been taking day/ night nurse for the worst cold ever which specifically says not to take if you are going to be poas- as I really thought that I wouldn't until I remembered the whole Xmas do thing I ignored that as the cold was killing me slowly! Last taken at about 1pm yesterday!

So if anyone has managed to read that giant post...... Thoughts???

Is it a line? Even if it is, is it just the drugs?

That is definitely a line! Congratulations!

I'm not 100% sure about the meds but don't take another dose before you speak to your doctor. Many women have taken/done things not recommended during pregnancy before they have got a positive test and they have perfectly healthy babies. xx

Oh my god guys thankyou for the replies and I really hope you're right! Rikalaily- I've not taken any since yesterday and I'm currently making do with cups of tea and sudacrem (for the chapped nose Blush)!

So shall I think of an excuse not to drink tommorrow just in case and test again when I'm sure the meds are out my system? X

How strange that it might interfere with the test, I've never heard of that. Are you sure it's all types of test it affects?

Allstoppedup · 05/12/2014 10:58

Cold sounds like a good excuse! Say it's a chest /sinus infection and antibiotics mean you can't drink...everyone will see right through it but if you actually have a big red festive nose, it might help your story! Grin

TarkaTheOtter- it says 'do not take if you are having a pregnancy test carried out on your urine' that's it no specifics of why or how it might effect so I'm confused!

Allstoppedup- yep I totally resemble Rudolph and everyone at work has seen me dying of there cold all week so perfect I suppose! Plus I'm arriving later than everyone else so hopefully they'll be too drunk to think about it!! Haha!

I can see three lines. A dark one and two faint ones. Can you get a digital one?

Report
PacificDogwood · 05/12/2014 11:07

Looks like a line to me too Smile - wishing you all the best.

I have no idea what ingredient in Night/day nurse would interfere with the test - it tests for bHCG which is pretty unique to human pregnancy.

You could go and invest in another test and repeat with nicely concentrated morning urine tomorrow?
For the purposes of your night out, I'd make my excuses about not drinking.

WipsGlitter- I do have a digi one but kinda made a promise to myself that I wouldn't use it till I was sure it would be bfp (pathetic I know but don't think I could face the brutality of bfn in clear digital words!) it's been in my knicker drawer for about 9 months! Haha!

PacificDogwood- I thought it strange as hcg is a hormone isn't it and so surely wouldn't resemble any if the meds in day/ night nurse bug is says what it says! Think I will take your suggestion and retake in the morning- today/ tonight is no doubt going to be the longest ever!!

Is the second line on the test pink?

Report
spamanderson · 05/12/2014 11:28

There's definitely a line there :) I can't imagine the medication would cause a false BFP but I would use the digi one in the morning with fmu :) I was 5 weeks pregnant when I first tested for dd2 (we'd stopped trying for 2 months so had no reason to think I'd be preg :/ ) and her line was as faint as that, the the digi came up with 3+ (5+ weeks). Got my fingers crossed for you! Let us know how you get on with the digi test!

I just went and looked it up: I cannot find any technical information of how it interferes with pregnancy tests, but apparently it does - every day a school day on MN Grin!

"This medicine may interfere with some pregnancy tests, causing false negative or false positive results."

from here

It does sound like you have to repeat the test, I think. Sorry.

It does look like a line to me too but it seems one of the ingredients (promethazine) can interfere with pregnancy tests. No idea why just found a reference to it online. www.medicines.org.uk/emc/medicine/16069/SPC

I hope it is a positive test for you. Give the medicine a bit more time to leave your system and take another test. Fingers crossed for you!

youmakemydreams · 05/12/2014 11:33

It is the promethazine in night nurse. It is a sedating anti histamine and can affect the results of some pregnancy tests. It takes between 2-4 days to leave your system.
I really don't wont to seem like the bearer of bad news just wanted to let you know.
I have fingers and toes firmly crossed for you.

So I went out and bought some midstreams from the £1 shop yesterday and couldn't resist doing one yesterday afternoon- despite my pee being so diluted it looked like water (tmi!) so no suprise it was a bfn.....

Just done one with fmu- there's the faintest of faint lines- took it apart to get a closer look- messed around inverting and grayscaling it etc and there is defo a line but faint! So really I'm non the wiser- is it the meds still, is it what I've been waiting all year for?! Who knows will continue to test every morning until I'm satisfied either way!! Thanks for the support guys xxx

Just done another- much clearer line today although still not as dark as the control?

Thoughts? Surely meds are out my system by now?! Line is stronger than yesterday so if it was meds causing it and I've took none since Thursday then it wouldn't be getting stronger would it? I'm so scared of getting excited incase I'm wrong! Haven't breathed a word to hubby yet- don't want to get him excited if it's nothing!!

Is it a line? Even if it is, is it just the drugs?

Well, that's a line, definitely a line Grin

Urine pregnancy test are not quantitative which means they do not measure how much pregnancy urine is in your urine once it's over the threshold of your test (it should tell you on your patient information leaflet? Usually 25 or 50umg) so how dark your line is does not mean anything at all.

You could try a different brand?
Or a digital one (although I don't trust their timing either).

Go see your GP - they can confirm pregnancy with a blood test.

In the meantime: cautiously optimistic congratulations ThanksSmile
