Conception

I think I'm misscarrying.....

I started bleeding this morning when I went to the toilet, and have been bleed nearly every time I've been since it's dark red and has some very small clots.

I'm only 5.5weeks, and have been to doctor this afternoon who told me 'to go home and keep my fingers crossed, while preparing for the worst'. This has made me feel terrible! Have resigned myself to the fact that I'm misscarrying, but so upset that I got no support from my doctor! He didn't conduct any tests or assessments at all! I know it's early days, but it's still emotionally horrendous!

Anyone else been through a similar thing?

Go to a & e and they'll send u for a scan if your doctor isn't doing anything. Don't just sit and worry.

Agree you should try to get a scan if you can. Your Dr sounds very dismissive. Plenty of women bleed and everything is fine. Hope you get seen and all is ok.

My boyfriends at work currently. He doesn't think I should go to a and e but just see what happens, I guess if I'm bleeding there's not a lot they can do about it this early on?

I'd personally go and get a scan as I'd want to check everything was ok and put my mind at ease rather than just waiting it out but it's totally up to you.

No there isn't anything that any one can do unfortunately.
A scan may serve no purpose either because there is very little definitively that can be seen so early.
Heartbeat can be seen at about 6 weeks.
Blood tests also give you limited information, not worth the bother imho.

It's waiting & limbo & awful sadness for the next week or so, that's how it goes.

Unless you get pain that you cannot tolerate, excessive bleeding with clots bigger than a 50p piece, then take some paracetamol and stay on the sofa near the toilet. That's all you can do for now.
Are you on your own?

If you do have a miscarriage you might need to go to A & E to ask to be put on a list to scan and check you haven't retained anything.

I am very sorry.

There is a section on miscarriage and pregnancy loss. There is one thread on how to prepare. Take care of yourself either way.

I don't think they can do anything just check you don't have an infection. When I went to A&E that is all that happened. Checked for infection and was put on list for scan a few days later.

Oh and bleeding doesn't always equate to miscarriage, LOADS of ladies on here will vouch for that x

There's really no point in a scan this early.

I agree with jimijack's advice. If you are miscarrying, you'll be more comfortable at home unless things get to the point where you need medical attention.

Bleeding means mc 50% of the time. The rest of the time things are fine. All you can do is wait at the moment.

Agree with everything Jimijack said.
I bled huge gushes of blood in my first pregnancy, and all was fine.
I had very different painful bleeding with my second pregnancy and I miscarried.
I spotted in my third pregnancy and all was fine.
Based on my experience, the last place I would have wanted to be when I miscarried was A&E.
Do you have an early pregnancy unit which you can self refer to?

They won't do anything at A&E. Try and get an appt at your EPU but to be honest a scan won't show much if anything so early on. It's horrible but the best thing you can do is rest and see what happens. It's awful I know, Iv had 3 mc. But really nothing anyone can do. Thinking of you xxx

There's a unit at our local hospital but doesn't accept self referrals unless you've had 3 miscarriages (I've already checked). Think I'm going to take jimijacks advice and sit it out at home. Getting the bf to pick up a few tests on way home so we can keep track of what's going on

Tests are also not worth shelling out for because you will still get a positive pregnancy test up to a week after a complete miscarriage in my experience. Really wouldn't bother.

That sounds like a recurrent miscarriage unit that would investigate possible causes, not a unit to help someone going through an mc (if that is what is happening). They are usually called Early Pregnancy Units/Early Pregnancy Assessment Units. Sometimes you need to be referred, others accept self-referrals.

Tests are pointless. I was getting stronger and stronger lines during my mc - it takes a while for hormone levels to fall. Even a couple of weeks after it started (and I had finally finished bleeding) I was still getting strong positives.

BTW, when I did mc, I had no warning signs (I found out from a routine scan that the foetus wasn't developing properly and miscarried a little while later). This pregnancy, I bled for 3 weeks non-stop and it is still going strong at 24 weeks. So don't lose heart because you are bleeding.

Ladies thanks for all your support. It was definitely an early misscarriage/chemical pregnancy. But after 5 days and a slightly heavier AF to normal I'm feeling positive and ready to try again as soon as possible!

In the mean time I'm reading every conception book under the sun! Loved the 'impatient woman's guide to getting pregnant' it was even delivered on a Sunday!!

I really wish people wouldn't advise a&e in these circs. Telling people to go and sit in a waiting room for hours, waiting to be seen by a doctor who can't do anything for you anyway, is pointless. Even if they have a scanner, which most don't, they wont use it on anyone less than 8-10 weeks, depending on protocols. At less than 6 weeks, even an expert sonographer will have very little to see.
And of you are in the middle of a miscarriage, a scan couldn't help you anyway. So really you are just advising people to go and have their miscarriage in the most public, uncomfortable place possible.

Sorry for you, OP, it really sucks. Good luck for the future.
