false positive ovulation test after miscarriage

Can anyone help me please?? I miscarried at 8 weeks about a week ago and am keen to get pregnant again quickly. I was told by Dr that i would get my period in 3-4 weeks but that there was no reason to wait to start ttc. I did a ovulation test this morning just to see (3 weeks would imply ovulation happening soon), and it was positive, but as this seems very soon, I dont know whether this could just be a result of the pregnancy/miscarriage??? Does anyone know if that would cause a +ve ovulation test? Any advice please??!

I can only tell you my experiance, we miscarried early at 6 weeks and just had to wait to discharge.

I ovulated very soon after that and a couple of times a month(I feel ovu pain)We didnt try straight away but i knew that it sent my body crazy. We didnt want to start trying immediately ie that cycle as i wanted to be able to date the next pregnancy properly and grieve and not replace the one we lost.

We got lucky abotu 3 months after and it seemed like it was an eternity but i was glad i waited so i could grieve for our nona.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear that newby. Gutting. The only reason that I know of to wait until you've had a period, is to make dating a subsequent pregnancy easier. You don't need to do so for any medical reason.

But so soon after mc your hormones will still be do-lally. A week after mine I went back to the hospital because my body was telling me that I was still pregnant (morning sickness, fatigue, cravings etc), but my head knew that I couldn't be. They did a urine test (faint positive) and a blood test which showed that my levels of hcg were still high enough to trigger pregnancy symptoms, but sufficiently lower than the test dome a week earlier to prove that I was dfinitely no longer pg. So the ovu test that you have done could well be disturbed by your post-pg hormones.

To my mind (and what we did) the best thing to do is to try and let things pass. Allow yourself to grieve, and start trying again when it feels right. Never mind the chemistry. If you want to do ovu tests, then wait until you've had a period or two and feel that, physically, things are back to normal.

I agree that it does seem too soon to be ovulating and will most probably be left over hormones from your pregnancy.
I can understand you not wanting to wait to start trying. I get pains when ovulating so when I felt them 3 weeks after mc it just clicked with me as the right time to start trying. I got pg straight away and I think I am about 7/8 weeks (worked out from suspected conception). I won't know my dates for sure till I get my dating scan but at this stage that's hardly something I'm going to be worried about.
For me it just seemed weird to be using contraception when all I wanted to do was get pg again.

Not sure really newby. I miscarried early (6weeks) about 3 weeks ago I've been doing ov testing and got a positive about 6 days ago which fitted exactly with my cycle (32 days) but I had a few days of negative ov sticks before I got the positive so am pretty sure it wasn't a hangover from the m/c.

Good luck.

Thanks so much for these replies - I think you must be all be right, my body needs to settle. (But you'll also udnerstand if you've been through it that I dont want to 'miss' ovualtion -if its not the right time thats fine, but i do want to give us the best chance). I think I should probably wait for a period anfd then get back on the ovu sticks (which I swore by in order to get pregnant last time!). Thanks guys - really appreciate your replies.

Very sorry to hear about your loss. I had a miscarriage last year and had exactly the same question about ovulation kits, so I did some investigating. Apparantly ovulation kits can be unreliable after a miscarriage because they respond to pregnancy hormones. Apparently HCG levels in normal pregnancies rise up until about 12 weeks. When you have a miscarriage the HCG levels begin to drop when the pregnancy ends (which is not necessarily the same time the foetus stops growing). So the time it takes for your HCG levels to go back to zero will depend on when the pregnancy ended. You will generally not ovulate until your HCG levels are very close to zero because your body still thinks you are pregnant. This is why some people who miscarried early will ovulate soon after and others may take longer. Because ovulation kits respond to the pregnancy hormones it can be very difficult to work out if you are actually ovulating or if you just have residule pregnancy hormones. It might help to take a pregnancy test and see if that comes up negative. If so, your HCG levels are probably very very low and there is a chance you might be ovulating. If however, it comes up positive, then I might be inclined to think that you haven't ovulated yet.

Best of luck with TTC.

Can someone possibly help me. Im so confused, I m/c on 22 Jan 07 and i dont no if im pregnant again or not. Ive regularly done pregnancy checks to check when hcg levels have gone down but theyve stayed at pregnant. For the past few days i have started having breast tenderness again and i dont no if its possible to be pregnant again or if its in my head because of the desire to b preg again. thx

newby - sorry to read about the m/c. For many women ovulation does begin again incredibly quickly after a miscarraige. For some that is within a couple of weeks. The only technical reson for waiting until a period - as others have said - is for dating purposes but then scans can cover that anyway.

Obviously that doesnt cover the emotinal aspects. "Do you feel ready to be pregnant again?" tends to be the bigger influence on trying again. have you booked some time with your doctor to get a blood test done.

I wish you well

@Pray17 I know I this was a long time ago for you, but I’d love to know your outcome if possible. I’m exact same boat miscarried 12 days ago, age 42 bleeding stopped at the weekend and very very faint line on preg tests barely visible but solid high results on the opk tests . So confused.

@Hollycharlie sorry I'm another person in the same situation, MC just over a week ago, very paint positive pg today but strong positive OV test, wondering what it could mean. What was the outcome for you? Did you figure out if the OV test was just positive because of left over hormones from the pregnancy?

@Hettycan sorry about your loss. It’s just rubbish. Yes it was pregnancy hormone took about 2 weeks to go, and ovulated on day 38 after bleeding started xx

@Hollycharlie thank you for responding, it's really helpful to know that's what it is and I'm not ovulating. I will put the tests away for a few weeks now I think.
I'm sorry for your loss too it really is so hard. X
