Long weird period after failed embryo transfer

I had an embryo transfer a few weeks back (non-medicated cycle). At 11dpo my blood test was negative for hcg despite massive pregnancy symptoms (I have a daughter and I felt pretty much the same as I did with her). I didn't test again after that.

My period started last Monday on time. It was pretty heavy and painful, which is fairly unusual for me. It lasted about 5 days of bleeding (normal) and then swapped to red/brown discharge over the weekend. Today (cd 9) it stopped entirely until this evening: I've just had a stringy clot (about 1cm long-ish) of dark red blood (sorry if this is gross/upsetting) and some more red/brown discharge.

Am I right in assuming that this is some sort of early miscarriage? Or is it just a weird period? When do I start to worry that something's up?

Thanks.

Hi oceanstwo - this sounds similar to what happened with me when I had my IVF - very strong pregnancy symptoms (though it was a fresh, medicated cycle so I knew it could be the medication causing the symptoms), but no BFP and a very painful and heavy period. I had had a chemical pregnancy the year before, and tbh it did feel very similar to the bleeding I had with that. Very similar emotionally too. It's a horrible time and you have my sympathy.

In my case I had a (successful) frozen embryo transfer three months later. Funnily enough with very few early pg symptoms.

Am sure your clinic would be very happy to reassure you if you are worried. Best of luck with your future attempts.

Thanks Golders. Good to know it's 'normal'... Horrible but normal.

Very pleased that you had success :)

damn ocean just saw your name here. I have no experience to share, but wanted to say hi and sorry for this. Really a shame. It doesn't help I know, but all the same. X

Cheers Purple. Dropped off the other thread since obsessing wasn't helping me much...

Bleeding totally stopped now so seems to all be over.

And DH and I have started SWI as of yesterday, so the fun can begin all over again :) (Golden - I had my embryos left after precautionary IVF pre-chemo. Chemo didn't ultimately harm my fertility but we wanted to use the embryos first before trying naturally).

x

ocean great to know that the chemo didn't mess with fertility and you are back to the 'fun' of the natural approach. I will be keeping an eye out for good news to come..... X

Just to let you know that I got my BFP yesterday (although DH and I already knew - have felt like death for the last week...). Period not due until tomorrow/Wednesday so not letting myself be too excited too soon, but line slightly darker this morning than last night so hopefully all good. First cycle trying again - DH is very proud of his 'super sperm'... ;)

Wow, congrats ocean, that's just great news. I had fun talking shit bout TTC with you before so I saw your name pop up here again, and, as it turns out, for the best reason. My best wishes for all that is coming up...
