Does a temp rise always indicate ovulation?

I had a thermal shift on my BBT chart around 10 days ago which has stayed high since, albeit with a few dips and peaks but always higher than previous temps. From what I understand, it's the corpus luteum which releases progesterone which in turn produces heat. I've been wrong about ov before and am frightened to get my hopes up.

Does anyone know of any circumstances when a temp shift has occured and there has been no ov? If so, what caused this?

TTC is one big rollercoaster of emotions. The ride just never stops.

Hi, good question. I temp and always get a clear shift, I use FF and take this to mean that ov has occurred. Being a worrier I have looked and looked for how exactly this could fail to be an absolute indicator; there are plenty of places where the value of BBT as an indicator are not has high as at FF (including the NHS guidelines).
People say all the time that it's not a useful predictive tool because by the time you see the shift it's 'too late', but this is just a confusion. True that for the sake of timing this is an issue but it doesn't make it less of an indicator.
I read one medical article which claimed that it doesn't necessarily show precisely and can indicate pre-ov (I don't know what this article is worth and still suggested the shift holds the same meaning, I think).

So...as far as I understand you should be pretty convinced that ov occurred (though in this game it seems we can't be sure of anything). I'll be interested to see if someone else comes along with better expertise that can shed some more light.

Hope this helps a little and Good luck.

Hi purple, thanks for your reply. I did find it helpful. I totally agree that it is misleading in the sense that it cannot indicate the ov has occurred.

I did notice ewcm around the time of suspected ov so also used OPK's which were definately maybe positive Hmm One day later I had the temp shift which I've never had in the four previous weeks of temping and it's stayed high since. I'm thinking this is a good sign. I have PCOS though and LH levels are notoriously high. I've never heard of this affecting temps though. It's all a mystery.
