Progesterone Levels: CD21 or 7DPO?

Hello -

I have just gotten my results from a CD21 progesterone levels check. It was 15 :(

I got the results by phone and will be seeing the doctor on Monday but I'm driving myself crazy with questions and am hoping that someone can shed some light in the meantime.

I know that a level of 30+ is indicative of ovulation, so 15 isn't great. But I am using Clearblue OPKs and got my smiley on day 17, which I take to mean I ovulated around day 18.

If my understanding is correct, this means my bloods were taken at 3 DPO rather than 7 DPO.

Could this be why my levels are low? Could I be tested 7 or 8 days after my smiley next month, and hopefully get a better result?

And if the result isn't better next time, what happens next?

I'm 37 and we are ttc #2 for over a year - would love some advice / support from anyone who knows what all this means.

Thanks.

Sorry, I know that the result means I probably didn't ovulate. I meant that if I did ovulate, I would have expected it to be the day after the smiley - I realise that you can get the LH surge but still not ovulate.

Hi, yes I would say the bloods were taken too early. You probably ovulated around day 18 or 19 (if you did), so the progesterone had not reached its peak. If the dr tells you to get the next one done on day 21, nod and smile and then book it for whenever 7dpo happens to be. My GP was pretty clued up about this stuff but from what I have read on here many are not.

If a repeat results indicates no ovulation, I think most drs would offer you Clomid to try to induce ovulation. But I would bet you are because 15 a couple of days after you think you oved certainly suggests something was happen.

Hello One I had a similar situation with my Day 21 blood test too. Mine were taken on Day 23 then AF arrived Day 25. I was new to TTC so pretty clueless to when I ovulated. I now know I get positive OPKs early in my cycle, day 10 / 11.

My result was only 16, which my GP said this was the low end of Ok, but most GPs aren't fertility experts. So I had it repeated at a more appropriate time the next month and it was 126!! Confiming I had def ovulated. So I would recommend having it done again, 7 or 8 days after the positive OPK.

HTH.

Thank you both so much for taking the time to reply and share your knowledge and experience about all this. I feel a bit reassured :)

Will use OPK again next month and get bloods done on 7DPO. Fingers crossed!
