Will they prescribe clomid if you're overweight?

I ate like my life depended on it during my last pregnancy and whilst on maternity leave, and unfortunately am still carrying a few excess pounds - enough to push me in to the high end of overweight according to my BMI Blush (carrying most of it in my boobs though).

I have opted to have a Fertility MOT privately as I am now 36 and wanted to get things rolling quickly. I have yet to have my consultation with scans, but based on blood tests the doctor thinks that I'm not regularly ovulating (which I also suspect). I think the first step to address this is clomid but I'm worried that I'll be knocked back due to my weight. Does anyone have any experience of this?

Also, can I just go to my GP and ask for clomid if I show all the reports I have done privately, or do I need to go through everything on the NHS too and be referred to a specialist to be prescribed it.

Can anyone help? Thanks

Clomid is usually prescribed by a specialist centre so I suspect you may have to go throught the whole rigmarole again if you choose to go the NHS route - it depends on your GP they may be able to make an exception.
Provided your general health is good and you have no other pre-existing conditions you weight would not stop your specialist prescribing Clomid - they may want to do extra monitoring though. Clomid tends to cause weight gain so that obviously wouldn't be what you would want. I think you need to have good chat with your GP and see what your options are. Good Luck !

Hi, When I had Clomid I had to lower my BMI to 28 before the doctor would prescribe it. Do you know what yours is?

you may want to ask/look into Tamoxifen instead, it works the same way as clomid however doesnt have half the side affects that clomid has.

Thanks everyone. I'm at around 29 now so I'd better polish off my Dukan cookbook!

I have also heard about Metformin which I think might be another option for the voluptuous

Hi, I'm new on here and was just reading the posts. I am in a very similar situation. I went to my GP 4 years ago as I was just not getting preg. They referred me to see the gynae, they done all the tests and discovered I have PCOS. Past few years I have gained a lot of weight and didn't know we're it all came from until I understood pcos a bit better. Anyway, I was under the care of the gynae for possibly 3 years and they would refuse to give me clomid because I am overweight. After a lot of persuasion they finally gave me metformin but did not give me clomid. I have now been discharged. I am very disappointment that they did not give me clomid as now I am giving up hope very quickly and do not believe I will ever conceive. I do understand that the drs do have to think of the patients first as clomid will increase your weight and that will just cause a risky pregnancy for you and the baby but it's just got to the point were I am not sure what the next step is from here.
