Any advice for what to ask GP?

At the end of October it will have been 6 months since I came off my pill to TTC and 6 months since I last saw AF. I figured the Doc wouldn't do anything till 6 months, so I've been not so patiently waiting and have booked an appointment to see her in a few weeks time. I've POAS a few times just in case, but it is obvious to me that nothing is happening.

I kind of feel like its hormones or something - since I've stopped taking the pill I've reverted to a teenager, my skin and my hair have got greasier and my boobs shrunk a bit (not that there was much there in the first place!)

So obviously I'll tell her all that, but I wondered if there was anything I should be asking or pushing for? I don't really know what the next step might be and I'm worried she'll just send me away to wait for longer, even though I've got a really strong feeling somethings not working right (and its not just pill getting out my system etc).

So any advice out there? Thanks

It did take me a year to get my periods back after coming off the pill. That was before I was ttc, so I just waited it out. I had been to see the gp though and she said that they could give me something to start a bleed but I can't remember what it was. Sorry this isn't more helpful but just wanted to say that it does take a while to get back to normal. Good luck.

Hi balderdabble

I'm in nearly the same position as you, came off the pill 4 months ago and not a sniff of AF. Was actually thinking about making a docs appointment to see what's happening.
I'm slightly different to your situation in that I already know I have wonky hormone levels and so I suspect that's why AF has disappeared-have an endocrinologist appt next march but don't want to wait until then if there is something I could be doing now iykwim.
All the best for your docs appointment, let us know what they say. Smile

I came off the pill in June 2010 and did not have AF until May 2011!! Then they have been a bit hit and miss since then, thought they were getting back to normal but after one in June i did not have another until August and now I am on CD59 (am hoping i don't get another one Wink) - so yes, as whereismywine said, it can take a while. I am going to the docs tomorrow as I am completely fed up with it all now and just hoping that there is not something more serious wrong!!

Fx'd for you and hope that the Dr can help you out and kick start your cycles again :)

Flixy, wow next March, that does seem a long time. Great that you have that in there, but I see why you might want to think about seeing the GP sooner - I get exactly the 'if there's something you could be doing now' feeling - everything takes so long anyway you don't want to delay any more than you have to.

GTR - thanks, it does help to know that it can just take a while. I hope the docs can help you out - I know what you mean, it can be very frustrating - I'll keep my fingers crossed for you too.

Before the pill I was extremely irregular, but I can't remember it ever taking this long. I think I'm also concerned because my mum had trouble conceiving - she was told they couldn't have kids and I came along years after they gave up actively trying! Her mum also only had 1 despite trying for more, so there is definitely a history of it. I should probably mention that to the GP too actually!

I had terribly irregular periods for months after coming off the pill, plus awful breakouts along my neck and jawline which indicated a hormonal problem. Had read about PCOS here, so went straight to my GP and pressed for tests. Sure enough, a scan showed cysts, although my blood results have all come back as normal. I've since managed to get referred to an endocrinologist, though, and he has taken my symptoms much more seriously. Have been on Metformin for a few months now, which has been brilliant at regulating my periods - plus, recent tests have shown that I'm ovulating - so we're now hoping that I'm on track to TTC for real.

It may well be that your body is just taking time to adjust after coming off the pill, but if you have a sense that something else is at work - as I had - then do go to your GP and ask for preliminary tests: day 3 and 21 bloods, and an abdominal scan. Very best of luck!

Thanks Chateau - I'm sure something else is going on so I'll ask for tests. Really good to hear your experience, thanks for sharing.

Great news that you're ovulating (and reasuring) - good luck TTC!

Cheers, Balderb! I was a little worried that my post might have come over all doom-and-gloomish, which wasn't my intention at all - it's just that I've learnt through bitter experience that GPs will try to fob you off if you're young and you've been trying for less than a year, in which case it really pays to stick to your guns and demand specific tests to which you are most certainly entitled. Fingers crossed for you, anyway - and let us know how it goes!

No not at all doom and gloom. To be honest, that's what I'm worried about - that I'll be fobbed off when my gut is telling me there is something else. I'll have to try insisting on tests. Appointment is not for a few weeks - thought I should wait the full 6 months. Just have to wait and see how it goes. Thanks for your advice.

Hi balderdabble I was in a similar situation, came off pill in june with hope ttc straight away but af never showed up. I did a few tests too just to check in case we had fallen lucky. I booked an appointment with my GP practice 3 months after waiting, typically af turned up the morning of my appointment!

I went along anyway and explained we were ttc etc and that I was a bit concerned with the lack of af and my age (37). It was a newby doctor so he took extensive notes and showed real concern. I was quite surprised but he sent me for my day 3 / day 21 blood tests. He also has said he will send dh for his swimmers testing too!

We are going for our follow up & results on Friday. It may be the start of our journey but at least we will know a bit more. I would say get yourself booked and take it from there.

Hope this helps

Thanks PollyRoxs. It is nice to hear some a positive move from a GP - you hear so many about them not doing anything! I'm definitely going to go and just try and insist if I do get any resistance.

Good luck for your results - i hope you get good news!
