Secondary infertility - what tests on the NHS?

hi all,

Sorry - I think I have asked this or a similar question before, but can't find the thread and have forgotten what people said... Also i think my brain was a bit addled and I didn't ask quite the right question.

I have a GP appointment on Monday and was wondering if anyone has been referred for tests for secondary infertility, and if so whether they could advise which tests they had, and whether they had to pay. I assume a blood test is free, not sure about more invasive stuff like laparoscopy/HyCoSy, or not strictly fertility treatment type stuff like ovarian cyst/fibroid/endo/scarring removal which would benefit fertility.

I know IUI/IVF are not funded if you have a child already, so am prepared for not being able to have these.

Many thanks for any advice,
M

Hi, we have secondary infertility too. Conceived DS no probs, now 19 mths ttc and nothing Sad.

Everything we have had done so far has been free. We have been to the gp who did the day 2 and day 21 blood tests (a couple of times as GP tested for wrong things first time round!) and a SA for DH. Then we were referred to fertility clinic (still free) and had another SA and a HSG x-ray for me. They have now prescribed me 3 mths of Clomid (£7.40 for the NHS prescription) and we'll see how that goes.

If that doesn't work we would be looking at going private for IUI or IVF.

Afraid I can't answer for the other procedures you mentioned as I guess they didn't think them necessary for us (the latest SA and the HSG cane back not showing anything obvious).

Hope that helps a bit xx

Thanks biscuit, that's good to know. Sorry you're having difficulties too. We're the same - no probs first time and now it's been 12 months and nothing. It's so hard.

Really hope the clomid works for you! x

we've got a 3yo dd and been trying now for just over a year. I had a mc in February but otherwise no luck! On the NHS I've had a scan (clear) and dh has had 2 SAs (first one borderline and improved with high dose vitamin C and wellman conception vits, now good) and Im having day 21 bloods on Monday, but the GP has told me that that is all that we are entitled to. It really varies by area which is so wrong! I hope that you get more than we've been offered!

Thanks Tina. I really hope you get your bfp soon. Can you not get treatment even if your day 21 bloods show something like PCOS? Or have they ruled that out?

I have a feeling something is wrong like an ovarian cyst or fibroids or both - increased facial hair, massive bloating, irregular heavy periods, abdo pain and spotting. Tbh I'd be going to the GP about this whether ttc or not so I really hope they can treat me regardless of whether it improves my fertility.
