Conception

Chances of a positive, then 3 negative results on digital pregnancy tests?

I have another thread going alongside this about my late AF but this is a new kettle of fish altogether...

AF was due on Saturday but she still hasn't shown up. Last night my worrier dh went to Tesco and returned with a twin-pack of Tesco brand digi tests.
First one was a resounding 'pregnant'
Second was a disappointing 'not pregnant'. But I only did them an hour apart, perhaps there wasn't a good HcG concentration??

Anyways....after the BFN, I then drove to Tesco's and returned with a twin-pack of Clearblue digi conception ind tests. Did one of them last night - BFN. (90mins since previous test).
Did one this morning - BFN. (3 hours after last test).

Could the HcG not had time replenish? Or am I deluding myself into thinking it's possible? (I am crazy broody but dh not so much...)
I thought dh was being very careful as (TMI ALERT) he never ejaculates inside me and he always 'finishes' with a condom (though he puts this on near the end).

I should add that we are not TTC as ds2 (dc3) is only 9m old!!

I'm sorry - I don't know the answer!

I have heard that one positive followed by negatives would suggest a chemical pregnancy. ie the egg was fertilized, produced a bit of hCg, but then is lost, so you get your AF like usual.

However, you took your tests so close together, I doubt this would be the answer.

The tests do vary in sensitivity. And it is far better to use first morning urine to test, when the pregnancy chemical is most concentrated. By the end of the day and after all that peeing, it'll be diluted!

Best thing is to wait a few days then test again with FMU.

:)

Hi have seen on here somewhere that cb digi take a while to show, the first you did would probably have been more concentrated, it is unlikely to get a false positive although not unheard of, no experience of tesco digi although contemplating using one in the future.
Hope you get the answer you want, maybe try and leave it a couple of days and test first thing in morning. Hcg doubles by the day x

Sadly, nobody can tell you. One of two things is happening. You are pregnant. Or you are not pregnant. If you are pregnant with a viable pregnancy the reasons for tests failing are varied. Not concentrated enough urine, user error, different sensitivities between tests (including ones in the same pack) etc. If you aren't pregnant then the single positive test, followed by negatives would indicate something like a chemical pregnancy.

I do understand how frustrated you are. Give it a couple of days. If no period test again. Not expensive digital tests, you'll be broke. Just a supermarket's own. Even Poundland do them. I'd be going spare too.

please stop testing for a day or two, you will either bankrupt yourself or go nuts!

Thanks ladies :)

Think I've already driven myself crazy, I did try to test again at lunchtime but there was an error on the test Angry. Now I'll have to save up my wee again Grin.

I'll leave it for a few days, I can't afford to keep spending a tenner on digi tests. I've bought a shop brand twin pack from the chemist so will do them with fmu over the next couple of days.

God how frustrating!! I wasn't this stressed when actually TTC!!

If you are overdue i'd go for a cheap one too as your hcg should be going up. Definately do a fmu as well :)

3 days late now so will stick to the cheapy ones :).

Tbh I don't think I'm pregnant. I don't feel pregnant, no sickness or anything (well apart from right now having eaten fish and chips for lunch!).

I'm exhausted but my 9m old is teething and often up in the night.

Dh doesn't want me to be pregnant but is it wrong to be hoping for a positive test?? I'm broody as hell! :) xx

Not in the slightest bit wrong! But worth waiting a bit longer before you test again.

Good luck!

Not wrong at all especially if u don't feel ready to never be pregnant again.

You probably won't be feeling any pregnancy symptoms yet it's still quite early :)

Good luck Hun if you got a cheapy do it in the morning and let us know

I didn't do quite as many tests as you :) but I did get a negative on a clear blue digital first thing in the morning after getting a positive the evening before with a different test (I forget which). The next test I did was positive though, and the one after that, and the one after that.......
I googled it after I got the negative and a chemical pregnancy seemed the most likely explanation - but it turned out just to be a duff test, or
possibly it wasn't sensitive enough as I was testing early.

CherryPie3 · 13/04/2011 11:10

Well I'm definitely not testing early as AF is now 4 days late Hmm

Test this morning was negative.

Don't think I'm pregnant, although that positive test keeps sticking in my mind.

What else can cause AF to be late/not turn up?

Confused

Am I or not??

hi just to say i did 2 tesco cheap tests after the 5 min a line came up,about an hour later i did 2 clearblue digi both came back not preg,so that night i went back to tesco and bought more cheap ones 3 pks lol,all came up positive i went to doctor got blood test came back yes.it was a full week before i got a positive with clearblue and it came up saying 2-3 weeks.
so you got bfp which were faint? then u are defo pregnant go to your doctor and get her to test.the digi ones need alot more hcg levels than a strip one cause when i did mine and came back no i found out the digi one's need about 50mlu and i phoned tesco help line they said that they dont know the mlu in there normal wait for line one's but they are defo very low.so get one of them i think its about £3 for a pack of 2 and if you get a faint line get yourself to the doc's

Thank you :)

I've ordered some eBay 'one step' cheapies so will continue to do those with fmu over the next fortnight. If still nothing a doctors appointment is in order I think.

ooooh cherry your wee is definately messing you about with these tests, definately get yourself to the dr's and ask them to do a test :)

Report
CherryPie3 · 13/04/2011 16:36

Yes it certainly is!! :)

I'll give these ebay cheapies a chance as I've just had an email from the seller saying they're shipped so I'll probably get them tomorrow.

I bought 20 of them and will do them over the next couple of weeks, that way if I am pregnant the hcg should have time to increase and 'positive-ise' a test, or it can stay non-existent and keep 'negative-ising' tests Grin

I am personally hoping for the former Grin
Husband is not....

Will keep you posted.

p.s...I got another v.v.v.v.v.v. faint bfp this afternoon - again took about 6-7 minutes to show tho. Evap line?
Refuse to get excited (although I may or may not have checked what my due date would be and how much double pushchairs are. And I may or may not be favouring the Phil and Teds Wink)

I read somewhere on here that the digi tests are not very sensitive and the dipstick ones are, maybe that's why it's not showing :(
what a mess around bet your feeling really anxious, I know I've said this before but could you not get in the dr's today save your fmu if you still have it, it would hopefully put your mind at rest :(
