I had my copper coil removed yesterday evening and had unprotected sex the night before. It is 15 days since the beginning of my last period, I am 34 what are the chances of me becoming pregnant ? I know I am probably hoping for the impossible but is there anybody out there that had a similar experience and fell pregnant? Look forward to hearing your replies......;-)

Well in theory yes you could be.

The coil is traditionally not very good contraception anyway - I read a thread once where a load of people said they'd fallen pregnant with one in (copper one rather than the mirena)

I'm gathering that if you are pregnant that's a good thing?! Grin

Readytobemum is that right!?You get so many conflicting advice, some say sperm only live for three days, some say 7.....I really hope I am but I think I might be a bit too hopeful as TTC #2 took me 9 months and according to the web my fertile years are almost over !LOL!Grin

yes that is correct but only for X sperm, not Y sperm. As Y sperm is much smaller and fragile! (If you don't know, you need X for a girl and Y for a boy)

Obviously two weeks is the longest it can survive, all depends on how good your partners swimmers are!

I wouldn't worry about it, the more you worry the more difficult it will be to conceive! Stress is a big factor!

I think the percentage is only 20% of women trying to conceive get pg on the first try so don't panic!!!

Well my period was due on Sunday, had a bit of pinching pain on my right side, sore boobs with fizzing nipple but have just got a BFN ;-(.I have a watery CM (sorry TMI !) but is this due to the copper coil coming out and my vaginal fluids trying to balance themselves out ? I was told copper kills sperm so am I trying to kid myself !!??? I have no normal AF symtoms like bloating etc. just feel different.....God I hate this Twilight Zone bit..........

I read that although in theory sperm can live up to 7 days, in relaity the average lifespan i sonly 2-3, so not sure about it. But theoretically you could get your coil out and ovulate right away and fall pregnant if you did it the night before, I had hoped for this last year when I got my mirena out, but it ook quite a few weeks for my period to show.

Good luck, I feel my best years are over re fertility to, despite only being 40 lol. I conceived DS3 quicker at 37 mind you than I did DS2 at 31.

so you had the coil removed the day after you had sex?

I think it's unlikely. I was asked not to have sex for 2 weeks before having the coil removed so they could be sure I wasn't pregnant, I think because it can have an abortive effect. I might be wrong on that though.

Thanks NGD...thats reassuring that you concieved quicker later on as this my main worry ! In theory they say that your periods shouldn't be effected with the coppper coil as there are no hormones in it like the mirena, I feel really tired today but think it is all the mental exhaustion of am I ? arn't I ..........

okay, had a google:

"When planning a day for your IUD removal, keep in mind that if you have your IUD removed near the time that you are ovulating, you could be at risk for becoming pregnant if you have had recent intercourse before the IUD is removed.

Sperm can live inside the vagina for up to 5 days.

Therefore, as an example, let?s say that you are scheduled to have your IUD removed on June 12, so you have intercourse on June 11 (one last time)! All goes as planned, and you have your IUD removal on June 12. If you ovulate on June 12, June 13, June 14, or June 15, you may become pregnant since the sperm (from your intercourse on June 11) can still be inside of you waiting to fertilize an egg. It is a wise idea not to have any intercourse (unless you also use a condom) for one week before your IUD removal to lower the likelihood that this scenario would occur."

So I am wrong! Maybe they told me not to have sex so that I couldn't accidentally get pregnant? (but why did they think I was having the coil out?!). Good luck Sproglet!

Blimey Iskra 2 weeks before removal !!!!That IS a long time ! I was only thinking is was a possibility as I had EWCM on the morning I had my coil removed so think I ovulated on that day and then of course unpretected sex the night before.....I suppose only time will tell......

It’s possible but unlikely. Also sperm can live for up to 5 days, 7 at a push. Not two weeks. Been told this by many a fertility specialist when feeling rather desperate

Yes you could be. My 5 year copper coil was due to expire so I had it removed a week before the expiry was up (although I've been told that most coils last longer than their expiry date). Myself and my partner had sex one last time without a condom 2 nights before it was removed and since then had been using condoms. I remember reading this thread when my period was late worrying that I might be pregnant. My period never came and low and behold I'm now 6 months pregnant. We have finally got over the shock and are now looking forward to having our last ever baby this summer 🤗.
