Conception on Implanon

Firstly, thank you so much for reading this. It's Sunday in the morning so I still have to wait another day till the possibility of getting a HPT.

I'm currently 19 with my own place, working and studying at university. When I was 16 I had problems with the pill, if I even took it 3-5 hours late I'd come on, which I just couldn't cope with, so I went on the Implanon implant. I had heavy periods for about 2 months as I recall (it was a quite ago!) then it settled into a regular cycle, coming on around the 25th each month.

I had the implant out about a year later to go natural as my relationship broke down and I wasn't interested in sex. My periods went back to normal immediately.

Now I'm with my partner, I went back into the implant. I had a 3 month period (with 1-2 days of spotting then back into the heavier stuff ((so sorry about this!!))), then back to the once a month routine I've had on the implant before. And now my period hasn't come this month. I'm nearly always regular, and I started when I was 11 and have never missed a month before. My best friend commented on my stomach a while back and it does feel larger, when I've not put weight on anywhere else, I've gone off alot of previously idolised foods, my nipples are tender to touch with a little pressure and I just keep eating, along with finding it hard to sleep and (randomly) nauseous, not like every day, just more often that normal.
I know I need to buy a HPT but I've been reading alot about them not working with the Implanon, and that I need a blood test? If I am carrying, I would keep it so the rate of MC on the implant scares me. Any advice?

You sound really worried!

Firstly, the rate of 'accidental' conception with the implant in is tiny. Erratic bleeding (including several bleed-free weeks at a time) is incredibly common with implanon users, and a far,far more likely explanation that pregnancy, even with your other symptoms.

I don't know why a home (urine) preg test wouldn't work..it measures a v specific pregnancy hormone which is not one of the 'normal' female hormones used in contraceptive products..but wouldn't know enough to tell you in detail, I'm afraid.

Certainly if you were pregnant, as far as I am aware there wouldn't be any increased risk of fetal abnormalities..don't know about misc risk.

Have you had a look at the manufacturers website or tried NHS direct, or NHS choices(online)? Some of the bigger shops eg asda/tesco with pharmacies may be open tomorrow, and you could get a test there.

Bottom line....irregular bleeds v.v.v. common with implant, unexpected pregnancy v.v.v. rare....hope that helps and try not to panic, best wishes.

Thank you so much Timetosmile, well, I've read alot of examples of women getting pregnant on the implant, surprisingly often, however quite a few of their fertile-powers have previous conquered the pill. I'll try and hunt something down tomorrow, very worried about the rumours floating round on the various parental websites about the HPT not being accurate on the implant, probably worth phoning a family planning clinic and asking if I can just chat.
Although, the implants there to cover me until I finish uni, I can't help a tiny excited bit of me thinking about names and a bigger house... Though I do realise it's very unlikely. But thanks for your support :)
