strange patch on ds tongue

hi my ds is 17 months and since around 4 months he keeps getting a red,pink patch on his tongue, its usually starts off on one side at the back and is like a smooth indentation,it gets bigger and bigger then fades, sometimes with a white edge but smooth in the middle, like there are no taste buds he sticks his fingers in and fiddles with it and i do think it is sore,it puts him off his food sometimes too, it sometimes covers over half his tongue and then it calms down to return a week later, it does seem to coincide with teething but lately it has been pretty constant and has started to appear on the other side too, i have seen 1 maxi facial specialist but it was not there at the time of the appointment so he did not even look but said it didnt sound serious, he has had a blood test to check his vitamin levels and they were fine. I feel like ive been fobbed off and no one know what it is, 2 doctors have now seen it when its there and they have no idea what it is and have never seen anything like it, has anyone else ever heard of anything like this, i cant keep ignoring it? thanks

Me and my DD have this! Its called geographic tounge or something, will check for you. Its not hamful, cant do anything about it and i think its inherited (well, me and dd have it, as does my mum!) Unsightly and sometimes tender but not harmful. Will just double check name for you

oh my god that is exactly it, this has been worrying me for soooo long, thank you so much for helping me find out what it is, i cant believe the mouth specialist didnt know it was this!!! im a bit mad actually that he made my baby have a blood test when if he had just looked in his mouth he would proberly of been able to diagnose it! ds dad has a strange tongue down both sides but it doesnt really change so this must be where it has come from. thankyou again u clever thing!! x

I had loads of treatment for thrush and bloodtests too because the doc didn't know what it was. Specialist also didnt know! I found out a while ago now by googling

its such a strange thing, i think he has it quite bad but maybe it will settle down as he gets older? poor thing sometimes it looks red raw, ive been worrying about it for over a year so you have really helped me out, just wish there was a cure for it.
does it affect your taste or amount of taste you have, because ds seems to get fed up of food really quickly, or if you give him the same thing twice, he will eat it the 1st time then refuse it the next day, and he seems to like strong flavour things?

Yes DD's looks very raw at times. They are huge patches and people often ask me whats wrong with her tounge..It feels quite tender and sometimes sore especially when you eat spicy foods or fizzy sweets/drinks. mine seems to have dissapeared since i had my DD's! I can sometimes get a tiny patch every now and then but not like it used to be.

DD sometimes says some foods are too spicy, when they are not at all spicy. Must just feel sore/irritated. I dont remember it effecting my taste and DD doesn't say anything about that..if it is feeling tender one day maybe your DS doesn't like to eat as it can also feel really strange, like you can feel the indentations iykwim.

This sounds like what my dd might have, I've noticed a raw-looking oval-shaped patch on her tongue. At first I thought she'd bitten it, but then I noticed it seemed to have spread to cover half her tongue! Then it went away again, and now it's back.

Just trying to give her lunch and she wouldn't finish the meal and I wondered if her tongue was uncomfortable so thought to myself "I'll find the answer on Mumsnet!" Thanks maybebaby... :) Did a bit of follow-up research and found this on wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geographic_tongue. Says that eggplant and tomato can make it worse and guess what was for lunch today?? Also says that mint can relieve and zinc supplements can help prevent, anyone tried this out?

hi my ds seems to flair up the worst when he is teething, i think teething gel helps to numb it a little, he does go off his food, even though the doctors say it not painful etc i think it is, and yes tomato and anything acidic do seem to irritate him, he loves minty things so maybe its because it soothes it, im hoping it will calm down as he gets older. I have since posting had it comfirmed by a doctor that it is geograpic tongue. (i was princessdaisyboo)

I have just found this and I am so grateful to find this information out... my 6 year old has had this and the doctor has constantly treated him for thrush, which no treatment worked! I have been beside myself with worry and he has had blood tests that have showed no immune deficiency or any other health problems. After reading this and the information you have provided I am sure this is what he has and will be taking this information to my doctor! Thank you so much!
