Tonsilitis advice please

My 16 month old has tonsilitis, and has had it for about 4 days. The Doctor wouldn't prescribe antibiotics, and said take calpol and nurofen which should releive it?
If it is not better by Friday, to go back!
All he has done is scream really loud all weekend. He's not interested in food, play, cuddles.
Any advice on what he would like to eat, or how to stop him crying?
He is normaly a happy baby!
Also, we are supposed to go on holiday on the 18th March ( next week) but can't take him if he is like this!
How long does it take him to feel better, an get back to normal?

Oh dear. Tonsilitis is really rotten can make them feel utterly dreadful and he is very young to work through it like that. Is his temp high?

They can't really eat because their throats are in so much pain, even drinking is sore which is why I am surprised your Doc has not given AB as in a baby this can cause dehydration esp with the fever.

To be honest DD is a real Tonsils sufferer and she is 99% better within 24 hours of penecillin. I personally wouldn't let her work through it as the fever is too high and she is too much in pain. I would go back.

Yeah, think I will go back. he has still been screaming after nurofen. However his temperatue has come down tonight! Will see how he is in the morning.
Thought about dyrolite, to stop him getting dehydrated, but he won't have that either !!
Fingers crossed the medicine works!!

Youo have my sympathy, nt dd (8.10) has just had a course of antibiotics prescribed for her tonsils. She is very reluctant to eat or drink due to the pain. I've found that ice lollies are the way forward. For a small baby I'd freeze some diluted fruit juice. It really is miserable for them. Her temp was 38.6 last night and 39.7 this morning despite the calpol and nurofen. Fingers crossed for a quick recovery.
