My dd is 3 week on wednesday. Her belly button stump fell off around a week ago, she was left with a bit that looked open to me when she cried or stretched but midwife said it was fine. Since sunday her belly button has started to smell so i am taking her to gp in the morning, however i have just changed her nappy and it looks red and i am now really concerned. Anyone else had this? Is so what is the treatment?

Hi yes my dd had this the smell was absolutely foul!!! It is rotting skin tho!! The gp will give you some antibiotic cream but this made my dds worse so went back and they gave me an antibiotic powder which was fab and cleared it up in about a day! Is there goo on her vests where it's oozing?

Your poor dd. My ds had this and it was rotting skin. When I had my dd 12 years ago it was standard practice to issue mums with an antibiotic powder to sprinkle over the belly button. When I had my ds 5 years later I actually asked the HV where the powder was. She replied they had stopped issuing it.

The powder cleared up the problem very quickly.
