2yo has started letting off really smelly guffs!

it sounds quite funny but believe me it's a bit grim! for the past 3ish days my 2yo (2 today yippee) has been letting some truly horrible guffs off. pickled egg/onion type guffs. it's all getting a bit beyond a joke now. i have absolutely no idea why this would have started. his food intake is the same as it always was, he hasn't been poorly. am i missing something? could he have something wrong with his tummy? or is it just something that will stop as quickly as it started? don't really feel this is one to trouble the doctor with, so any advice would be gratefully received.
