ADVICE NEEDED: High Temp from Bacterial Infection??

DS (age 7) has had what looked like a spot in his nose for a few days. He picked it on Monday and came screaming to me that he was having a nosebleed!! I was quite shocked about how much it bled and put Savlon on it. Took him to GP yesterday as it started looking oozy and was told that it was a bacterial infection and was prescribed Bactran nose ointment.

Last night (after seeing the GP) he got a temperature and has had one today (around 39c), not really wanted to eat and laid on the sofa all day which is very unlike him as he usually never ill. He keeps saying his head hurts (prob due to the temp and even after he has had ibuprofen) but does not have any other symptoms such as cough, runny nose etc that I would connect with a virus so I am worried that the temp may be to do with the infection. I am thinking that he may need antibiotics as the bacteria may have spread and am considering taking him to the walk in centre tonight as I am stressing about him getting bacteria in his bloodstream and septacemia (sic) etc. Am I being OTT??

It does sound like he needs abs with that temperature. In the meantime, plenty of fluids, calpol, and childrens nurofen to reduce temperature.

you need to ring out of hours. Spots onthe nose can develop into cellulitis which would explain the high temp without cold symptoms. Because cellulitis can spread and causes inflammation and swelling of the affected tissues and because this is very close to his airways and his brain you need to seek professional advice tonight. I'm not saying that is what it is as I only have your description to go on but you need to get advice.

You are not being ott and the gp wont think so either. Hope its not though.

I think it's a good idea to get him seen tonight, I'd be concerned about an infection aswell. I'd bypass the walk in centre and take him to A&E, a GP or the walk in clinic should send him here anyway as he may need IV antibiotics and some blood tests, they can't do these anywhere else as they need a 24 hour lab.

I really do hope he's OK. Please keep us updated.

OP please go get him seen tonight - I had a spot on my cheek which grew and got infected over the course of three days and by the time I sought help it had dripped pus onto my brain stem through the nasal cavity. I developed meningicoccal septacemia and was gravely ill for several weeks.

Great, I hope he's fine and we are all panicing for nothing, it's really the best thing to get it checked out though, it's not worth the risk.

Didn't mean to scare you - sorry - but do get him seen, it's very unlikely to be that - it's so unusual to develop it this way but the nasal cavity is huge and infections do fester there once established.

Does he have signs of veins tracking to the site of the infection?

Well got to A&E at 11pm and home by 1am which I was pretty pleased with. Dr agreed with me about the bacteria causing the temp and gave us antibiotics (of course his temp had gone down to 37.7 by the time we were seen!!). He is much better this morning, back to fighting with DS1 and bouncing off the walls .

Can't help wondering though whether the colloidal silver I gave him yesterday made any difference as he was so ill all day (gave him 3 5ml doses and squirted some in his nose) but when I woke him up to go to A&E, he seemed much improved but obviously I took him anyway just in case it came back.

Thanks for all your replies ladies. Our normal Sunday night nail cutting ritual had gone out of the window over the holidays and I am sure this was caused by him putting his fingers up his nose and transferring some nastiness in there. Teach me to be so lax and to shout even louder at the DCs about hand washing!!

That's great news. The nose is not a good place to have a bacterial infection, meningitis is always a real concern. I'm so pleased he's on the mend.
