Is it normal for strawberry birthmarks to bleed?

DS1 (4 mo) has a strawberry birthmark on his inner thigh - well, the join of his thigh and groin really, iyswim. It has been growing steadily since he was born which we were told was normal, but sometimes it looks a bit cracked and redder in places, like it's sore.

Today there was a tiny bit of blood in his nappy, just where the strawberry mark is. Is this normal? Should I be doing anything about it?

He has got nappy rash at the moment, could this be making it sore and more likely to bleed, and can I put anything on it?

Thank you for any advice!

i know someone whose baby had a strawberry birthmark that started bleeding and also getting bigger. she went to her gp to get it checked and was referred to children's hospital to have it looked at but they seemed happy enough and it stopped bleeding/growing soon after. worth another visit to the gp to be sure I'd think.

thanks morocco - I think you're right, perhaps a little trip to the doc's is in order.

Both of mine have had them and I have never known them to bleed personally but we were told that they can bleed as they are made up of blood vessles. I guess any bit of irritation can cause them to be sore, it sounds like yours sons is it an aqward place too. We were told never to put anything on ours.

If they continually rub then they can be removed. I wouldn't worry about it to much but it's probably worth mentioning it to your pead

Awqard awc aqw

bugger... i cannot spell that !

dd had big strawberry birthmark and HV warned me that if it bled, it could bleed profusely. She suggested I take dd to see a specialist but all my doctor friends pooh-poohed that, so I didn't.

3 years on, it is fading fast and it's caused no trouble. But I would check it out with the doc - it may be that your ds's strawberry is in an area that will be rubbed by the nappy and so is vulnerable to bleed, and you may need medical advice on how to handle this.

Thank you! He is prone to nappy rash so have been putting Metanium around it, it's possible that the cream is getting onto it accidentally and causing problems.

Poor lamb is teething so it's nappy rash-tastic at the moment
