It can be an allergy/asthma thing, bumbly - how old is he/she?

We tried dd (on doctor's suggestion) with Zirtec syrup (Benadryl Junior) in case her was hayfever, and it seemed to help. They also thought she might be asthmatic (she wasn't even 2 at the time) but inhalers made no difference, so apparently not.

Humidifiers have helped us hugely with our night time coughy/snorey LO

Could be a nasal drip! Mucous hits back of throat when lying down so can cause coughing. Is it only for an hour at the beginning though?

for us it turned out to be cow's milk intolerance... we were sure she was developing asthma as its in the genes but no cow's milk no cough!

try goats milk for a couple of nights - we knew that was the problem on that timescale.

We have same problem with ds 15 months. I'm asthmatic but he doesn't have typical dry asthma cough - very chesty. Coughs till he retches and then starts again until we get him upright for upto half an oour and use steam. Has been going on since end of November. Have had 2 weeks off in one go at most since then. Sometimes 3 times a night. Have bought a humidifier now to try it (as paint is falling off in the bathroom after 7 months steaming!!). He does have reflux so wonder if that? Sorry to have gatecrashe3d -thought people could help us both at the same time.

What kind of coughing is it? This could help determine cause. Don't know about you, but our main problem is the lost sleep that it causes for all of us!

Bethy, it sounds like my asthma actually, I wouldn´t rule it out because you experience it differently!

OP, isn´t he just clearing things out as mucus clogs up the system when lying flat in bed, especially with los who can´t blow their nose before sleep.. But allergies and asthma are a distinct possibility, keep an eye on the grass pollen count for any correlation is this has only started recently..
