Temp of 38.8 and feeling cold and achey.

Ds2 is 8 and has been asleep on me for about an hour. Also off his food, hardly eating any birthday cake. Snoring atm.

Flu, virus or something else?

Alternate ibuprofen and calpol. Cool layers of clothes to try and cool him down.

Are you in an area where seine flu is a concern? If so I would probably call NHS direct for advise.

Temp first took at 12.10 and calpol given.

Temp took again about 10 minutes ago and more calpol given.

Is dozing on the sofa and refusing to take off his jumper.

Did the self help thing on NHS direct and it said phone 999. That was because I answered he was sleepy and had a headache.

DH thinks he has a virus.

Don't think swine flu is a possiblility.

He doesn't look himself and keeps whimpering.

Have you checked for rashes?

That is a very high temp. Have you got any Nurofen/ibuprofen. It is much better at reducign temperature.

triple, you should ring 999, people get in a panic about it but atually you should in this situation.

do it now once your son gets to 40 degrees he is at risk of a convulsion. strip himand call 999 if u have been told to by nhs direct.

Only gave him calpol a few minutes ago and haven't double medicined a child before so not sure how to go about that.

no he probably hasn't got swine flu but he could have meningitis - there isn't always a rash.

Ibuprofen and paracetamol are different classes of medicine and safe to give together.

I would be calling someone medical though with a temperature that high.

you can give nurofen and calpol at the same time - best bet though is to check temp every 10 mins calpol can take up to 40 mins to take effect.

and alternate 2 hrs apart agree with perfect - u need to call someone, at 8 yrs old febrile convulsions can have a permanent effect on the brain.

u r not ott. If temp has not started to come down and he is stripped u need to ring out cool flannels and place on calfs to gradually lower temp - he won't like it as he will probably feel cold to him.

ok calpol takes average of 40 mins to take effect. According to peadiatric consultant if u cannot control temp to below 38 degrees using calpol / nurofen at home then u need to medical assistance. re-check temp if still not down after the 40 min mark ring the out of hours number for your gp. Then they can look at him - they are qualified and will be able to LOOK at him we aren't and can't. If there is cause for concern they will refer u if not they will send u home.

Either way take the duvet away.

well done. so last calpol was at 17.10 so temp should have begun to drop by 17.50.

I am sure that DH is right and it is a virus, why the doc can do nothing about, but he has never had a temp this high before.
