advice needed please in a panic :(

Today my 15 week old nephew stopped breathing and had to be given mouth to mouth. He has now been transferred to b'ham childrens hospital, sedated and put on respitery (??) aid. They suspect a viral infection.

I was with him on friday with my 5 week old DD and am now petrified the same could happen

is a viral infection contagious??

any advice gratefully recieved

Viruses are contagious but some pass really easily between people, others are really pretty hard to catch. If you know the name of the virus, ring NHS Direct and see what they say - otherwise talk to someone in the family who could ask the hospital. If it was something really contagious and nasty I'm sure they would already have been in touch.

Hssled is right, but either way - is your DD OK at the moment, does she have a cold or is she fine?

When this passes over & things are calmer I would suggest you book yourself onto a first aid course

she seems fine albeit a bit constipated (advice grateful for that too!)

had the snuffles when she was 2 weeks old but that has gone now

not sure yet they are running tests, he just went blue and floppy and wasnt breathing so they rang an ambulance who then gave him mouth to mouth and rushed him to our local hospital, he was still blue and floppy for a while afterwards. That was my last update im not sure how he is now and cant get intouch with brother as he in hospital and his phone off, although they are keeping him in for a few days.

How scary, I hope he's a lot better very fast - its awful when such teeny ones get that sick

FWIW, I think tiny babies catch viruses less easily than bigger kids - they're not yet playing with toys, sucking each others' cuddlies, hugging each other etc. And if its something like bronchiolitis, your DN may well not have yet been infectious last Friday anyway.

Also, when dd2 had RSV bronchiolitis at 4 weeks she was very, very ill wiht it - but loads of other babies who had it were not nearly as ill, they just had wheezy coughy colds. So the same virus doesn't necessarily mean the same reactions, IYSWIM.

Hope you get good news about your nephew, and reassurance about your dd's ongoing good health, soon.

well DD is no longer constipated
And sam is stable but still sedated, they are still running tests and are going to wake him up tomorrow.

Ds had bronchiolitis quite bad, he was very wheezy when he breathed and his chest sort of dipped in with every breath, now he is prone to colds

Im in KH, we had a first aid class free as part of our post-natal stuff.
Ask yr hv about them (we started post-natal 'classes' when DD was 6weeks)

he took a turn for the worst overnight and my DB phoned at 3:30am to say they didnt think he was going to make it through the night

As it is, he is stable now, but they have found swelling on his brain and said due to the fact that his brain was starved of oxygen when he stopped breathing he could be brain damaged. They still have him sedated and he is having an mri scan tomorrow.

This is too much for a 15 week old baby to be going through especially as when i saw him on friday he was sniffly but still laughing and smiling at everything in site

sorry to hear your nephew is so poorly, am hoping that you get some better news soon.

I would also recommend the first aid course, i definately feel more prepared since doing first aid training.

I'm so sorry, and really really hope he's on the mend by tomorrow. They go up and down so scarily fast at this age. Thinking of you, your dn, and his family...

Well they took him off sedation at 5pm yesterday, he is still asleep but his tongue has been twitching which is a good sign. He is going for the mri scan later on today to try and find out the cause, although they have tested all his organs and they are fine apart from a thick left ventrical, they also operated on his leg and took a piece of muscle and skin to test (why??)

the worrying thing is they have had electrodes on his head monitoring his brain pattern and that is very limited although its still very early days and it could be because of the sedation.

He's in good hands at Birmingham

It was only the ventilator keeping him alive, his mummy and daddy and both sets of nanny and grandads are there with him for his final moments.

I cant believe it has happened, my last memories of my little nephew was passing him back to my mum cause he had farted and it stunk. Why couldnt it have been a kiss or a cuddle or a chuckle or smile. Life is cruel and there is no god.
