my 9year old keeps having a raised temperature, sometimes with headache and a bit off his food.

he will feel grotty for some times only a day and then have a few good days, and then it happens again!

he has been like this 4 or 5 times now in the last 6 weeks. i have been to the doctors twice, they cant find any reason for it and basically fob us off .

he was lay down last night, refusing his favourite tea, headache and temp was 37.7 (not high but is usually 36 for him). today he looks fine but temp still 37.2
same scenario each time.

someone advise please as i am getting all a bit worried

cheery the normal range is up to 37.5 ish a high temp is considered to be 39 and above
he may just be a bit virally having gone back to school does he have any other symptoms?

My DD has this fairly often eg 6-7 times last school year, one doc said that it could be migraine, one said she was wagging school!, and one said she was fighting off viruses she had already had and thats why she wasn't actually ill. Still don't know which is the answer.

Are you sure (really sorry- this sounds awful!) that his normal temperature is 36? That sounds really low to me. Are you using the same thermometer?

Does he feel hot? If not, I would forget about taking his temperature, and have a look at what's happening at school, is there a pattern to the days he feels grotty? Is he overtired - would a day in bed be a good idea? Does he sleep well? Is he a worrier? My dd always gets a headache if she's worried about something (and it can be something so trivial I may not have even been aware that it was an issue.

Is he drinking enough in school??? Could also be a worry thing my dd gets headache and butterflies if she is worried about something.

yes its the same thermometer, i just know that he is usually between 36 and 36.5 on it, same as me. it beeps if its over 37.5 to indicate a fever , which has been the case mainly at night.

each time he has a headache, theres no disputin it, he goes white as a ghost.
hes not got his normal appetite and also things like when he goes riding his bike with his dad ona sunday, he just wants to come home whereas normally he'd be out for hours.
some days though hes seemed fine.

the doctor did try to say he was faking it but he always says that when he doesnt know what it is. and i know he isnt

Has he had a cold, maybe he has sinus issues lingering, this can cause all of the symptoms you are describing.

Report
andiem · 30/09/2008 12:28

cheery 37.5 isn't really a raised temp though
have you given him any medication ibuprofen? it sounds like he is a bit virally from the aftermath of a cold or something

ye, have given nurofen. he doesnt seem really unwell today, he did last night though and as i say this keeps happening.

he was off school one day last week and the week before aswell.
he does have a low immune system which he gets check ups for and also allergys

i have even wondered if the guinea pigs could be the cause. they live outside but this started the day after i bought them!

I think I'd go back to the doctors, repeat that he has a frequent low-grade fever, allergies and immune system problems, that it's been going on for longer than seems normal and request a blood test. Just to be on the safe side.

definately ask for a blood test this will pick signs of infection. Are his glands up at all? i remember feeling like that when i was a teenager and had glandular fever.somedays you feel like shit others are just fine.If your doctor won't do it get a second opinion

ds's friend has been like this turned out to be glandular fever although only one of his glands was slightly raised so missed on the initial exam.
A blood test should tell if there is anything going on.

Agree with castille and megandtyler. Go with your instinct that something isn't right and push for it to investigated. The tiredness on the bike rides rang alarm bells for me - particularly if its something he usually enjoys.

Re the temp - it is in the normal range but if it's not in the normal range for your ds then it is unusual. For instance if my dd is at 37 I know she's fine. If ds, who is usually 35-36 is at 37 then I know something is up. Hope you get it sorted.
