Does this sound normal? Noticed something odd about DD's genitals

DD (two) has had thrush so have been applying cream and noticed when I had to part her vulva that she had what looked like two vaginal openings. She has an obvious vaginal opening then a bit of skin and then another tiny hole (more round than the vag hole).

I don't have any other girls so I have no idea if this is normal at that age (I don't have it so am wondering if it's something peculiar to little girls or just an oddity with her.) I'm a bit to ask friends.

DH said perhaps it 'defuses' for want of a better word, when she's older or when she embarks on a sexual relationship but I can't say I remember anything like that with me (having said that I wasn't very observant about my own genitals as a youngster)

Has anyone else noticed anything like this with their DD's?

Thanks, I'm a name changer BTW

Umm I think that's probably her urethra - the opening from the tube from her bladder.

Did you or your DH honestly not know that there were two holes? Where did you think you wee from?

Sorry for being blunt, I'm just rather shocked that you might not know that

Yep def urethra and I think you'll find that you do have it

no it's not the urethra, obviously we did know that. It, as I said is two vaginal openings. Or so it seems. If it is her urethra then it is at least four or five times the size of mine!

Have a look at your own body with the help of a mirror (or get your dp to look)

erm, it's where the wee comes from.

so she has a urethra, and 2 vaginal openinings and an anus? definitely 4 openings? very rare condition of having two vaginas and two uteri.. IIRC. if you really can see 4 openings, then maybe take her to the doctors.

Afaik all babies are checked thoroughly at birth by the midwife so anything untoward should have been noted. Personally if I was in your position I would take her to the HV or GP and mention my concerns.

ok, so she has 3 holes then? the urethra, and then 2 vaginal openings?

Yes I did, and so did he. Hence the thread.

Could it be that she has a partially broken hymen?

that doesn't sounds like a urethra - you can only see a urethra in girls this young when the vag opening is "opened", pulled apart slightly as it were which you didn't say you were doing. If it is looking like another vaginal opening I would taker her to be checked out.

Is the hymen not a membrane that is inside the vagina though? As that is what crossed our mind but I dismissed it.

Anyway for all you helpful posters thanks and yes she has officially got a pee hole two other holes and an anus.

for clarity, the tiny hole is between her anus and vagina, seperated by skin either side.

Is it possible that she has labial adhesions from the irritation of nappies and thrush? Here is a link that might help: www.keepkidshealthy.com/welcome/commonproblems/labialadhesions.html

I have seen a baby with these adhesions that made it appear as though she had two vaginal openings because the labia were fused half way through the vaginal opening.

It might help you to have her seen by your GP because it will put your mind at ease.

I hope you find reassurance and an answer soon.

I am even more convinced that you will find that it is a labial adhesion. This is EXACTLY how I would describe what I saw on the baby I described above.

definitely take her to the doctors. probably nothing sinister, but for your peace of mind, she needs checking out

spicemonster · 23/09/2008 20:50

sorry

You didn't mention the urethra in your OP so I rather jumped to conclusions. Hope you get it sorted and yes, I'd go to my GP

Thank you Cadmum that's really helpful

I'm concerned now that it has something to do with an over use of a canesten/ hydrocortisone cream that she was prescribed for her eczema. I was told that it was perfectly safe for use in the nappy region but I'm questioning that now. We've been using it on and off for well over a year and a half.

She has really been complaining of sore bits for a while and I'd put it down to thrush, nappy rash. Do you think it's causing her discomfort?

Did mean to also say thanks lulumama and crush for not dismissing my concerns. It's very upsetting when you have a genuine concern and people fob you off with some smart arse remark.

Spicemonster, apology accepted
