can anyone shed some light on this mystery for me? non-urgent, non-critical, but puzzling nonetheless.

am asking here coz it seems such a vague question and id feel a div asking the doc. have tried asking my mum (shes medical) but she dunno anything about it. its something that has niggled slightly for years but never seemed to be much of an issue so never really followed it up, but i am curious to see if anyone might know anything about it and what causes it and if theres anything i ought to know about it.

all that intro made it sound much more interesting than it is - sorry to disappoint!

ds2 is now 4.2. when he laughs a lot (through tickles or humour) he burps these huge great dirty burps. not just one but repeated evil sounding explosions. it sounds really sore. when asked he doesnt say it hurts but hes always done it so maybe he just doesnt know it oughtnt to iyswim. he has such a delicious giggle and wicked sense of humour, its a shame that this always happens when he really enjoys something. he absolutely HATES being tickled now, and im fairly sure this is the reason why. if hes laying down when it happens he seems to gulp hard, like somethings come up his food pipe a bit.

similarly, if he has a cough he always throws up too. (not every time he coughs, but usually at night and at least once or twice in the duration of each cold). in fact, the minute he has a cold, we water his milk drinks down 50:50 coz we know we may well be meeting it again later [blurgh]. he LOVES milk btw, its like crack to him.

SO. what do you think? could he have some kind of reflux problem or something? is that even what reflux is? does it sound like anything anyone knows of? if i had some kind of an idea what it is i could do some research and find out if theres things i can do for him to make him more comfortable etc.

ive tried googling but am clearly shit at it coz i cant see anything relevent.

I don't know what it is but DS2 does the same. In fact if he laughs too much he is sick!

he can laugh lots but as soon as you hear that burp you need to stop making him laugh!!

I have no theories actually although he was a horror of a baby so if it turns out to some kind of reflux i wouldn't be surprised!

nappies........three of mine were DX with severe gastroesophigal reflux (sp?) as babies and were on lots of meds........tash and jacob ebing my worst with it.

interestingly jacob is my worst sufferer of croup, gets it everytime he has a cold, and often has the cough without other symptoms too.......never anything attributed to the reflux, just 'one of those things'.

max used to be like your DS2 however......and threw up with every cough and giggles set him off too!

we had him checked (ooh, saying that, he snored terribly aswell), and it was over enlarged tonsils, that with colds and giggling and coughing touched, irritating his gag reflex making him sick......

has his tonsils been checked???

megs was our other crouper, she never had reflux, but she needed her tonsils out.

I am not medical and do not know, but I have an idea. Do you think it could be something like the development of the oesophagus(?). Maybe he will grow out of it as the sphincter muscles grow stronger? This is entirely speculative.

I'm thinking like this, as dd used to fart for England. She's grown out of it now; I did mention it at the GP once - just an aside - and he said something about developing processes or whathaveyou.

i didnt know they took tonsils out these days ! no, ive never had his tosils checked... did max have his out too? did he grow out of the gag reflex thing?

jux, thats kind of the assumption ive been working on tbh... and quite happy for that to be 'it' - just occurs to me (through thinking/posting about ds3's croup) that it would be good to know if there were any underlying features of the phenomenon i should bear in mind.

I am tempted to agree that his sphincter muscle at the top of his tummy isn't keeping everything in. He burps because he is swallowing so much air, he's vomiting when he's lying down because the muscle that should be tight and keeping everything in his tummy isn't doing it's job properly, they vomit because the food and stomach acid is iritating their throat so they vomit it back to protect themselves from the acid. I would take him to the GP and discuss this, then request that he's refered to a gastroenterologist maybe.

yes, max did, for that very reason.

he did get tonsilitis, but not enough to warrent them coming out. t'was when I said about the gagging and the snoring and the vomiting that they did, as that was having a huge effect on his sleep and life (and ours as you can imagine).

Doctors are there to listen to mums. It's their job. Parents know their children far better than anyone else so a parents concerns are always listened to.

Intersting- when DD laughs she always gets hiccups. She had them about 4 times a day in the womb too. AND she had reflux as a baby. SPooky

all calm here so far... tho ds3's restorative catchup 'nap' today means hes wide awake so far [gah] am tucking into my dinner finally now.

mom - dont feel bad, yeah actually it does sound v similar... just maybe a little less ... (searching for a word to replace 'severe' coz i dont think ds2 is severe at all... just enough of an issue to present him problems with comfort at times and maybe (as it now seems) something i can help him with

thanks again avena, thats reassuring. i always have kicked-to-back-of-the-mind paranoia that theyll diagnone me with munchausens(sp) by proxy when i go in to say how serious something seems and the bloody child in question chooses that half hour to bounce around looking the picture of health!!

ds had scarlett fever in July, he was bouncing around the doctor's office. I only took him because I couldn't identify the rash . They do tend to get pissed off if they have diagnosed your child with viral conjunctivitis and you take them to A&E because you didn't believe them (seriously! Wasn't me, I had to deal with the mother). I'm a paranoid mother. I've seen some nasty things at the hospital I worked at so I do tend to overuse the GP sometimes. It has 'mums a student nurse' on his notes so they completely understand . I hope!

Ahh, she was a frequent offender because she didn't trust her GP's diagnoses. She was just neurotic. I triaged her, she was in bits and almost crying, poor thing.
