does he eat sugary food shortly before the energy rush? Sugary foods contain quick release energy which could explain the crazy energy, but then sugar levels drop rapidly which could explain the headaches.

I eliminate sugary foods from my ds's diet as much as possible because he gets crazy from it too - he gets fruity treats instead of sweets and chocolate - raisins are a great treat for out and about!

If you go to the GP, they will prob ask about his diet - limit sugar intake for a week and see if its any better.

when it happens without sugar is there a chance that someone else is giving him sugar without you knowing (grandparents maybe?) what cereals does he have in the morning (if he has cereals that is) because some cereals that are advertised as being healthy and whole grain are really high in sugar (cheerios for example) - I bought them once without checking and about an hour after my DS had them he went hyper! Checked the sugar and it is SERIOUSLY high!

Also, if he is having sugar on a regular basis, it will effect his behaviour without more sugar as a trigger. A week of limited sugar (no added sugar if possible) and a diet with plenty of healthy fruits and vegetables should make a marked difference in his behaviour - give it a go, you've got nothing to lose - if it doesn't work then a trip to the gp may be of use.
