DS in 21/2.
Two nights ago he woke up crying and shouting, had a temp of 38.4 and told us he had a sore throat. Paramedics ended up coming out to us as after calpol his temp was still high and his arms and legs were convulsing. He was taken to hospital but no tests done for anything, and came home in the morning.

All day yesterday temp was between 38-39, with regular calpol, and sore throat remained. He was sipping water and doing wees. We were passed around from our doctors, 111, 999 paramedic call backs, out of hours doctors call backs but nobody actually saw him. Paramedic over the phone suggested symptoms sound like tonsillitis and to ask for antibiotics from our doctor in the morning.
Paramedics ended up coming out in the night again for high temperature and convulsions and again they took him to hospital, this time they didn't check him but have him antibiotics for tonsillitis.

Today he has seemed brighter than the day before, and with regular calpol and nurofen (the hospital told us we should use it) his temperature has stayed normal; he has had one day of antibiotics.

He had last nurofen at 7pm and I checked his temp at 1am and it was 38.4. So we gave nurofen to bring temp down. I've just taken it again and it's still 38.4. What's my next step? When do I worry? How long should I expect a fever to last?

Does he seem unwell other than temp?

His throat hurts him.
He has slept quite peacefully, woken a few times to make sure I'm next to him and whimpered a bit, and when asked tells me it's his throat. He had a sip of squash recently too.

His breathing is nice and steady and even

He sounds ok to me. I would keep going with 4 hourly calpol, lots of liquids for 24 hours. 38 isn’t too awful. His breathing sounds reassuring. Try to get some sleep yourself.

Tonsillitis can be really nasty and cause stubborn fevers. Are you alternating paracetamol & nurofen? It might need the combination of them.

But try not to worry, if he’s sleeping and breathing easily, then he’s not in too much discomfort. 38.4 isn’t too high,

It will take a good 24/48 hours for the antibiotics to make a difference to tonsillitis.
Things always seem scary at 2am but try to get some sleep and rest.

Our little boy is 20 months and he had bacterial tonsillitis the start of March so was on antibiotics for 10 days and then it came back so was on more for 5 days...he had a stubborn fever for a couple of days but it also gave him tummy ache due to there glands being up...we alternated calpol/nurofen for a couple of days aswel and continued after we had finished his antibiotics xx

Thank you all. We are alternating neurofen and Calpol, yes. Today is second day of anti biotics. I'm not even sure if it is tonsillitis. Could be corona? Who knows. I wish I did!

He is due neurofen again now but that will be his second dose of the day and he's only allowed three a day. His temp is okay at the moment, it's in the green. Should I hold off the neurofen and just give his calpol when due?

I would still give him the neurofen this time. Once his temp has stayed in the green over a couple of cycles then think about missing one.

Apart from reducing his temperature it will also help stop his throat being as sore
