That looks very sore! I've had them throughout my life and had surgery at one point. It looks like the nail has been cut at the side - is there a bit that has in grown that you can't see? I found that putting the tiniest bit of cotton wool under the nail to move it outwards helped.

Very painful - needed antibiotics a few times as pus leaked out of it..
Had it done ag the doctors twice and once at the podiatrist - if you can afford to take him to the podiatrist for assessment, and the op, i would recommend it as theyre feet-specifically trained rather than generally trained - I've had no problems since they did it but several in the time between gp doing it and podiatrist doing it

I would go to a podiatrist.

I took ds1 a few years ago and they fixed it with one visit. Not going to lie, it was painful for ds1 whilst they were sorting it out but it has not returned.

Looks more like an infection due to the nail being broken/torn away.

Keep bathing with hot salty water and then savlon or similar. If it gets much more red or swollen it may need anti biotics. My DS needed some a couple of times for similar infections, but now he no longer bites his toe nails, they seem to have stopped 🤢

Yep. My ds had it multiple times, had the treatment at the podiatrist but ended up with surgery on both big toes. Podiatrist is incredibly painful though!

My DS (14) has had ongoing problems with this and eventually had the surgery. I think the toe looks quite infected and may need an antibiotic. Probably better to go to the GP first as the podiatrist will most likely not touch it while it's so inflamed. But keep up the salt baths

Second this. I had problems when younger and had to have surgery too. Salt baths and the cotton wool trick helped me. You can also go to the GP and get a topical antibiotic ointment on prescription which helps too.

I just had one a few weeks ago and it was agony! The cotton wool method fixed it and saved me losing a toenail.

Magnesium sulphate paste from the chemist to draw out the infection which should ease the pain a bit.

I had these as a
Child - wish my mum had taken me
To a podiatrist
Mine grew through in the end after a summer in flip flops - they do flare up and I now see a podiatrist

He'll be eligible for NHS Podiatry - you may not need a GP referral, can possibly contact the service direct. Keep up the salt water soaks.
