Advice from opticians please

DS (6) wears glasses but we have problems getting glasses to fit him - the frames are often too large / fall down his nose (he is quite petite). In specsavers today and they were trying to get me to choose glasses that I thought were too big for his face - as he will grow into them! Surely I need to get glasses that fit him now for them to work properly? And I assume there is nothing to stop me taking his prescription elsewhere - Specsavers seemed reluctant to give me the NHS voucher that's required.

Really would appreciate some advice

Yes you can take the prescription anywhere. Dd had a strap for her glasses at one point to keep hers on her nose

You can take a copy of the prescription anywhere,
make sure to ask for the yellow voucher,
this is how they claim the cost from the NHS and take it somewhere with a registered dispensing optician

Of course they need to fit him now. Take him elsewhere.

Yes they need to fit him now. Where abouts are you located?

Have a look at tomato glasses online they are amazing for fitting children.

The issue most of the time is a child's bridge of the nose isn't yet fully developed so the glasses have nothing to sit on

You need to find a good dispensing optician who know what they are doing for kids glasses.

To be clear you don't buy them online, they will tell you a local stockist if you like them.

I have ordered them many times for my patients.

Thanks everyone. Yes Threecat the issue is DS doesn't have a bridge and has a small face (like me)

I've heard of tomato glasses but none of the opticians near us stock them. I maybe need to look farther afield. A lot of the opticians have been quite sniffy about taking prescriptions from elsewhere muttering things like 'oh it would be better if you came to see the optician here for continuity of care'.

Problem is DS really likes the optician we see at specsavers and doesn't want to move but I have found the fitting to be awful over the last 10 months ...

I found Vision Express to have a nicer range for children. They do smaller frames

Sorry for delay in replying, if you see a dispensing optician you can request they order tomato glasses as a specialist item. I don't stock them as such but will
And do order if necessary. They maybe able to claim the small glasses supplement on the gos3 reducing any cost to you.

Where are you located?
