My DS was fine yesterday morning, then by lunchtime he had a runny nose and a low level fever so I knew something was brewing. Put him to bed at 6.30pm and he woke up absolutely on fire at 10pm with heavy laboured breathing and a strange cough almost like a bark.

Phoned 111, took him to an out of hours appointment at 12.15am - at first the doctor tried to fob us off saying it was a cold / cough, however his heart rate was high and he was 39.1degrees so she gave calpol and iburprophen and we were told to wait 20mins for affect.

45 mins later and DS was very distressed, gasping, drooling and crying and 'barking' - I called the Dr back and pointed out the strange gasping noise and she tried to tell me 'its just because he's crying' er, no - he doesn't cry like that. Then he had a big round of bark coughing and she finally realised - croup.

Oral steroids given at 1am and we were sent home. DS then slept well all night and woke at 8.15am. In the drama of it all I forgot to ask what we should watch out for today. He seems ok in himself but every time he coughs it makes him cry - must be sore. Is there anything else I should be doing? Should I keep him dosed up on calpol? How do I know if he needs to go back?

I would be seeking medical advice to be honest. Don't think in general there is an issue taking steroids and paracetamol together in adults, but he is very young so I would want to check - maybe a pharmacist could help if you called or popped in. I definitely wouldn't give any more nurofen/ibuprofen after he's had steroids unless specifically advised. Hope he feels better soon - sounds like a long night!

No issues with steroids and calpol/ibuprofen.

Be cautious if he has 'stridor' (listen on YouTube) or if he seems really drooly and unwell in himself. But if you suspect either of these go to a&e and not OOH drs.

My eldest DD had a good few rounds of croup when she was little - we ended up at OOH doctors and A&E once and she was given steroids too. In general I found lots of water, calpol to reduce any fever. Usually after the steroids it all calmed down the second night but takes a few days to go. I would only be back at GP or OOH if the barking part of the cough emerged again (always at night for some reason) or stridor (really noisy breathing). But as I said these usually disappear after they've given the meds for it. Also cold air works for the cough/wheeze at night - outside if cold enough or stand in front of an open freezer. This brings back memories! Hope your LO is ok.

Thanks everyone.

He had the stridor yesterday but not really today. He’s just coughing normally now too. I will give him calpol because he still has a bit of a fever.

How is your ds now? There is no issue with combining steroids with calpol/nurofen to keep on top of his fever as one that high can also cause fast breathing on its own even without the croup!

Thanks @Nogodsnomasters last night it took us 3h to settle him for bed, his bedroom just felt so stuffy despite the window open (but the fireworks were so noisy! Angry ) and cool mist humidifier running. we ended up opening all the other windows in the house which eventually freshened up the house. Then I took him out in the garden bundled up and we watched fireworks for 20mins and that was enough to get him to sleep afterwards.

He then slept all night til 6.30am so I'm glad he's had a good rest. Woke up croup-y coughing a little bit and he's quite hot so have just given him some calpol again. He seems a little better but still suffering poor boy.

Nothing worse than looking after a sick child, especially when so young like your ds. It's very stressful. I hope you have an okay day with him today. If the fever lasts longer than 3 or 4 days bring him to gp again xx

Just wanted to bump this thread, he's still ill. Sad

The croup cough has gone but now he's just got a bad cold, constantly streaming with snot, rattly cough. He doesn't seem to have a temperature but its been a whole week now and he's barely eating any food - just taking his bottle.

Should I be worried / taking him back to the doctors?

I wouldn’t go back to drs for this - sounds like a normal cold to me. Plenty of milk will keep him going, bring out his favourite food to tempt him. He’ll get better! If the temperature reappears, or he gets breathless or other symptoms, then I’d tale him to GP at that point.

Sounds as though he is on the mend, stiltonontoast. He'll probably be fine in a day or so. You've done all the right things but the first doctor you saw was a bit of a prat to be frank.

A very unpleasant experience for you, it's horrible when little ones are ill but - such is life.

Thanks Rachelover40 and Camelsinthegobi

He's much much better today, almost back to his normal happy self again and he's actually eating.

Downside is, now I have it! and its absolutely horrible so I understand why he was feeling so rotten.
