4 year old constant cold and cough

Since DS4 started school he’s caught every bug going. He’s been to the doctor a couple of times and chest is clear and temperature is controlled with the usual otc medication.

Half term is coming up hopefully will give him a chance to recover and I wondered what I could do to help boost his immune system if anything?

Any ideas gratefully received. We’re sat up now because he had shivers and a temperature and then was sick (because of the phlegm). He’s fine in himself, just wants the cough to go and so do I!

Hi op, I really feel for you and your ds. Is this your sons first year in school? We went through the same thing last year with my ds first year in school. I'm sorry to say that it's completely normal and will probably last most of the winter as his immune system needs to build up. It's so stressful when they are constantly ill (I thought so anyway). All you can do is the usual stuff... Teaspoon of honey if the cough is tickly, plenty of fluids, calpol/nurofen when allowed, steam filled bathroom, vapour rub on the chest, prop him up with pillows at night time so he's not laid flat, vapour plug in's by calpol are very good as are a humidifier in the room at night.

If the cough is continuous for 8 weeks or more take back to gp as they may offer an antibiotic or inhaler to try and clear it.

Yes, Reception. It’s so hard. Some of the children don’t seem to be coming down with anything, some of them are ill all the time. My DS was exposed at nursery but that wasn’t winter type cold bugs, it was things like scarlet fever and chicken pox.

DH threw the humidifier when we moved😩will get another

Yes I found the same that some children in the class seemed to sail through and it seemed to be the same bunch of kids who constantly had snotty noses and coughs. Seems our children are in that group.

My son already had the chicken pox before he started school last year so he was just plagued with cold, ear infection, cold, throat infection, cold, chest infection and so on and so on. Don't get me wrong he does have a cold right now but it's a standard one with no temp etc whereas this time last school term he'd already had about 4 days off sick! So I'm considering this an improvement.

Ah bless him, there isn't much you can do about that and I'm sure the teachers in reception understand because they see it every year.
