Avulsion fracture on the outside of the ankle - any chance of a cast that can be walked on?

Dd aged 9 seems to twist her ankle last week at school but wasn't putting weight on it so we took her to A&E where an avulsion fracture was diagnosed on the outside boney bit of her ankle.

She's had some soft bandages on it and we went back to the hospital clinic today. As it's still very sore and she can't walk on it they've put a cast on - I think they called it a backslab and we have to go back tomorrow to see the trauma team. We were told that they'll probably put a more permanent cast on it.

Does anyone know if it's likely to be one that she can walk on?

It's very likely that she will be able to have weight bearing cast. The big backslab she has on now is applied in A&E to allow for any swelling to increase (usually applied soon ish after injury). The fracture clinic have a much better range of casts & boots. Good luck

Oh thanks. I hope you're right. She's doing well with the crutches but can't go far and is too heavy for me to carry very far.

It's half term next week too and she had loads that she was looking forward to doing. We'll have to think of more sedentary things to keep her busy!

Yes they usually put on a fibreglass cast once swelling has gone down.

I'd put her in a walking boot and weight bear as tolerated (if fracture is as described).

Thanks all. She's got a big grey boot for 3 weeks and can walk on it as she feels able to. It's great as she loves having a bath and as this can be removed she's had a bath before bed tonight.

I have to say that the hospital have been amazing every time that we've been. I have told the staff and complemented them on their FB page. Once we're finished I think I'll write too.

Really glad she's been given a walking boot - so so much easier than the heavy back slab.
Thank you for thanking the staff - it really does make people's day to hear those words
