Should I take toddler back to GP?

DD (2 on Friday) spent the weekend boiling hot, dozing on and off on my lap and watching TV. She cried the rest of the time, refused to eat, didn't drink much, was just generally very poorly and miserable. On Monday I took her to the GP, who checked her over. DD's ears were very red and waxy, and she gave us Amoxicillin. DD doesn't like it but she's taking it.

She says her tummy is sore (could be constipation - she's normally on Movicol but I couldn't get any in her until Monday), and she's "too wobbly" (her words) to stand/walk. If she does walk then she staggers and cries.

Last Thursday I took her to the GP for the rash on her thighs and was told it was fungal and given cream. It's fading but not totally gone. I don't think this is related but it could be.

We don't normally go to the GP this much! But if she's still the same in the morning should I take her back? Or wait it out another few days? She's so tired and doesn't want to play or do anything but watch TV/play on the tablet. She's done a bit of colouring and played blocks for a bit, but I can tell she just can't be bothered. Normally she's a little whirlwind! She slept for three hours this afternoon, usually it's 1! She did have some dinner, though. Not much, but more than yesterday.

She had a cold before this, then the rash, and now this. She's still coughing and snotty, she snores and her breathing is a bit rattly. The GP said her chest was okay. I just feel so sorry for her and want to help.

Also, she keeps saying "knee hurts", but pointing to her inner thigh. This is where the rash is but she's not pointing to that.

Take her to see a different GP. Dual pathology (2 unrelated illnesses, IE a fungal rash and a virus) is unusual in children. And fungal rashes take weeks or months to settle, not days. I'd be suspicious that the rash was either part of the illness or a reaction to the antibiotics. I'm also surprised your GP gave you antibiotics anyway for a first visit for an ear infection. They don't normally for children, or at least are not supposed to.

Thanks bonzo. I did wonder aboutthe ABs, but DD was so poorly on Monday I didn't question it.

The rash came before the virus. She had it for a week or so before I took her, as we thought it was just where her nappy had leaked two nights in a row. It didn't seem to bother her until one morning she started scratching it. The GP (a different one to the one who gave us ABs) said it would take a minimum of two weeks to clear.

DH thinks she's pointing to the glands in her groin when she says her 'knee' hurts.

Before we put her to bed DH noticed that her neck glands are huge. I couldn't see anything when I changed her nappy, though.

She's never been ill like this before. She's so unhappy.

Definitely take her back to the GP tomorrow, it's worrying that she won't stand or walk. Will she bear any weight at all? Could it be her hip that's hurting and sending pain down through her thighs?

She can stand and walk a bit, but doesn't want to and says she's "a bit wobbly". Then she gets upset. If she does walk then she staggers and looks like she's going to fall over. It reminds me of when she learnt to walk.

She's just woken up crying and saying it hurts but she can't tell me where.

Hmm, not really.

It's more like she's got no strength in her legs. Sometimes it looks like her knees are going to buckle at any moment. But she can still climb onto the sofa, and stand up holding on. The only thing I can compare it to is when she was learning to walk and she staggered around.

She gets very upset at the prospect of standing/walking, like she's afraid to in case it hurts or she falls.

She's been wobbly/not wanting to stand since Saturday. On Friday she was absolutely fine (she's been walking for well over a year, runs everywhere, etc so very confident). Over the weekend she didn't really get much opportunity to stand/walk because she slept on my lap most of the day.

When we saw the GP on Monday she asked to see her walk and that was the first time I saw her staggering. She was all over the place Then yesterday afternoon she perked up a bit and managed to walk across the living room (I held onto her), but last night and this evening she took a few steps towards DH and he had to catch her both times.

I would take her back. The wobblyness would concern me.

Definitely doesn't sound right, I would see the GP first thing, assuming she's ok overnight. When she wakes, watch carefully to see if it's one leg more than the other, or any particular position that she doesn't like. My DD1 had something similar as a toddler. At first we thought she was just weak/worn out from a virus, but then she started playing von her ride-on and we realized she was only using one leg. Turned out to be an infection.

I will call them first thing and hope for an appointment. The GP did say to bring her back in if the walking got worse, and it's not really worse, just absolutely no better.

You are worried enough to post so I would say take her back, listen to your instincts. I hope she's better very soon.

Yes I would take her back. I just think a small child with that little energy is always a worry and I'd err on the side of caution.

My ds is a similar age and had a truly horrendous virus after Christmas - for a full week he stayed on the sofa, dozing, with an awful temperature. I only took him to docs once but in retrospect I wished I'd taken him sooner...it could have been so much more serious and I should have had him checked out the first couple of days.

He was very wobbly on his legs too, almost walking as though they were wooden if that makes sense? Very jarring and unsteady. In his case it was from lack of use and it surprised me how quickly it happened - one day on the sofa and he found it very hard to walk. So after a week of being on the sofa it took him a little while to become comfortable with walking again.

Hope she feels much better soon.

Yes Hoggle, that's what I thought. She hasn't walked for days and her legs have got used to it! She sat on my lap for two days straight, which is a long time really. Plus she's knackered in general, what with trying to get better and not sleeping well at night.

I'm pinning all my hopes on it being something as 'simple' as that.

Hi Going!

She was fine yesterday! Well, much much much better, anyway. I was all set to make an appointment, but she seemed to improve overnight. She actually played and managed to walk around quite a bit. She was tired and a bit grumpy, and kept saying her groin was hurting, but other that she was okay.

Today is her birthday and she's been running about all day! Not as steady on her feet as she was before she was unwell, but she's not complaining about it any more, and she hasn't fallen over. I'm still going to keep a very close eye on her, but she seems fine. I imagine it was just fatigue and 'forgetting' how to walk from sitting for so long, but it was really worrying for awhile as she normally never sits still!
