3yo complaining of headache all day? Banged his head on Fri?

I'm not sure if I need to act on this now (I have a tendency to panic as I have anxiety problems, so often catastrophise when it's not necessary), or whether it's just a headache?

Basically my three year old (just turned 3 if that's relevant) has been quiet and quite lethargic all day. Woke up complaining of a headache (same thing happened yesterday but he was fine for the rest of the day), and has mostly wanted to play quiet games and watch TV under a blanket today. He didn't want to go outside or walk the dog which is unlike him, but I figured that he's probably coming down with a cold or something. This evening though, he's been lying on the floor complaining that his head really hurts at the front, and has gone to bed and fallen asleep before drinking his milk or having stories or anything, he just sort of got in bed and within a few seconds his eyes were closed and he was asleep- again, very unusual for him, he usually fights bedtime. He kept screwing his face up and wincing as if it was really hurting him? I have given him two doses of calpol today to help with his headache, and he has been mostly eating and drinking, but refused to eat any of his tea.

I have just spoken to DH, who told me that preschool said that he had an accident on Friday as he fell backwards off a climbing frame and banged his head and had a lump, but they said he calmed down fairly quickly (although they did say he was very upset initially- whereas normally he is pretty hardy and tends to bounce!), and the bump had completely gone by the time DH picked him up, and he forgot to mention it to me until now. Now i'm worried though, if he had a head injury, it would have shown up before now wouldn't it? Do three year olds get headaches?

I don't know if I need to do anything other than keep an eye on him tonight?

With that history I would get him checked out. I am not a medic but I have a very nearly three year old.

Yes you should get him checked. Look up.minor head injuries and what you should look for.

Get him checked out.

If he fussed after the incident then better than being quiet and knocked out but fact is he had a head injury so headache few days after could be related

Take him to aNd e now should be quiet or kerp an eye give call and go in the morning

My 3yr old DS is just getting over some sort of virus that started with him complaining of a headache. He was crying with it on Sat night and had a raging temperature, luckily it came down with calpol and ibuprofen. He's now very coldy. So maybe he has something similar. I'd have thought if it was anything to do with the fall it would have happened before now. However, if you are not happy and feel worried take him to a and e. They won't begrudge a 3 year old being brought in. If you don't go then maybe sleep in his room with him so you can keep an eye on him.

Argh, I thought that might be the general consensus. I'm just calling 111 as once before when I called them we were able to bypass a and e and got sent straight to the children's ward instead. Thank you for your quick replies.

Good luck. Hope all goes well. I basically fell on the back of my head last winter (long story!) I did have a headache and was quiet for a while but was fine.
You are doing the right thing though obviously.

Argh, I posted a reply when we got home last night, but for some reason it seems to have not posted? How annoying!

Well I'm glad we went as it turns out that DS has a mild concussion, poor thing. He's still quiet today, but the dr noticed last night that his glands were up, and she suspected that he was coming down with tonsillitis (unrelated to the head injury obviously), and low and behold he's got a sore throat and is coughing today, so i'd say she's right. I just hope it stays mild, as last time he had tonsillitis, he ended up in hospital for a few days on a drip. Still, main thing is that his head should get better in the next couple of weeks, so he's just got to take it slowly for a bit and not charge around like he normally does- but I guess the tonsillitis will help with that as he wont want to charge around much anyway.

Thanks for checking up on him Smile Sorry that my update didn't post last night.

I'm glad he is OK OP as you never really know with head injuries. Even without that factor it was worth getting him checked out with those symptoms. Sorry to hear he has tonsillitis though. My DS had that, it can be nasty Flowers
