Hi, please can anyone let me know their experience of the LHRH test? My daughter (aged 8) has been seen by a consultant who has suggested she should have the test. I have concerns over hormones being injected into her and any potential side effects.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I am seeking advice on any mums who have had experience with early puberty and LHRH test?

My daughter started developing breast buds at age 6. Now 7 and is due an LHRH test. No other symptoms of puberty yet.

She is average height and is quite slim for some background information.

Thanks

Hi @Bri11. The lhrh is a blood test which is used to diagnose precocious (early) puberty. Your DD will be injected with a hormone and then blood will be taken at several intervals. The nurse taking the blood will numb the area first so your daughter shouldn't feel anything.

@Bri11, also to say, if the lhrh test shows your daughter is going through true puberty, as she is only 7, you may be offered puberty blockers (injections) to halt the process until she is a bit older.

Thank you @cloudcett this is what worries me I’m not sure I like the idea of having to inject hormones however if this is necessary then of course she will have them.
My worry is that the consultant has told me nothing to worry about I’ll see her in a year but let me know in the meantime If she gets anymore signs of puberty. Then I receive letter saying they want to test further.

Are there any side affects from the LHRH test ?

Thanks and sorry I think I had a little panic when I received the letters and then was researching all sorts

Hi @Bri11, no side effects of the test that I am aware of. When my DD had it done, we were in hospital for about 1.5 hours. I just took her tablet and headphones and she watched a film. She was absolutely fine with it. I do understand it's very worrying, but I actually think it's good that they are doing this test for your daughter - it will confirm one way or the other whether she is in puberty. She may not be, but if she is, they can discuss your options, re treatment. Hope this helps
