Hey,
I have a 3 mths old girl who was born with belly button hernia approx. 1,5cm in diameter.
I have heard from a friend of a friend that there are plasters designed specifically for newborn umbilical hernia (produced in Germany?) and widely available in pharmacies in Germany and Poland. I had a friend who was going to Poland for Xmas and they bought me those (around £1.50 for one plaster). We started using them on the 7th of Jan. They are not cheap but totally worth the money!!!!
Just three days ago (Jan 28th) after not even a month of using them we discovered that hernia has popped back in (and does not seem to reappear when the baby is crying, sleeping without the plaster !!!). We were dreading a surgery so we decided to try them out. They were a bit fiddly to apply at first, I must admit (our baby kicks a lot) but my husband got the knack v quickly.
It really worked so far and we we will be using them for one more month to be sure it has healed properly and the muscles are strong enough to hold the intestines inside. We have stopped applying them at night for now to let the skin breathe and force the muscle tissue to work unsupported. I thought i must share it as if not my Polish friend I would have not heard of them, the docs were only talking of surgery if it didn't go y the age of 2.
BTW I'm going to raise it with my GP. These plasters should be available widely in pharmacies in UK too. Application method is typed in English so I guess they should be prescribed to spare babies from surgeries. In the end, the cost of a surgery to NHS must be bigger than the cost of a couple of months of therapy....
