1yo - hideous poos. TMI ahoy - but any advice?

My DS aged 1 started with diarrhoea last Tues - so far, so tummy bug, we thought. He was off his food too, and high temp, and we basically had 2 days of green watery hideousness - easily 15 nappies per day. No vomiting thankfully, and he was drinking milk and water fine, so HV whom I rang for advice was content for me to hang fire before taking him to the docs. He seemed better on Fri, but I noticed a runny nose, and he's since been going through an awful cold. I think he's also teething as is biting everything he can get his hands on. But the hideous poos are back. They never got as far as fully formed iyswim, before the cold/teething arrived, and they haven't gone back to watery or as frequent; more something between thick gravy and thick custard, varying between green and yellow, and maybe 3-4 a day. DS' bum is red raw despite us changing him the minute a poo arrives, and I'm at a loss for the cause and re whether to take him to the GP. Is this all part of the same bug? Or is he just still recovering/developing a temp lactose intolerance? I've never known him react like this to teething before. His poos currently seem to be prompted by eating - after a couple of mouthfuls he farts and follows through bless him. But he's in a lot of pain with wind and his nappy - am using Metanium but want to cry when I change him Sad

Any advice gratefully received

I would go to gp and get him checked. At any rate you can get a stronger cream for his bum even if nothing else

Yes, this is what I was thinking - I think the big guns might need to be brought out re the cream

I think I'm hesitating partially because HV said it can take up to 14 days for normal service to resume after d or v, so I'm not sure if my expectations are too high!

GPs are generally very good at seeing young babies and children. I think you should go, get him checked out and if everything is fine then at least you'll have had some reassurance.

Adenovirus is a possibility.

DD1 had 21 days of pooing every 2 hours round the clock. Just foul.

I have no real advice just a lot of sympathy!

We went through something similar with DS when he was 13mo. His poos literally changed overnight from properly formed poos to watery messes that smelled of vomit.

We had a sample tested but there was no infection found.

They got a bit better but they were still frequent, messy and a lot of the time we'd have to change all his clothes and bath him.

He just weaned from BFing at 13mo cause I was pregnant so we thought maybe he wasn't ready for cow's milk. We changed his diet but the poos didn't improve!

He did cut 4 big teeth (3 molars and a canine) at the end of Nov and things improved slightly.

Then at the beginning of Jan he was sick with a cough and cold and teething again and the terrible poos came back with a vengeance. We threw away so many clothes because they were destroyed with poo!

He's almost 16mo now and things are better.

We found Caldesene powder worked well on the sore bum and the GP did prescribe a steroid cream to use occasionally.

The poos never seemed to upset or pain him but his bum was sore.

GP suggested it was toddler diarrhoea and that he'd probably grow out of it.

It's tough though, it's so unpleasant for them and seems so sore! Our little man was always in great form though so we took comfort in that.

I hope it clears up a bit for you and him soon.

Thank you all - some food for thought! Think will try GP and see what they say

I think you could try avoiding dairy for a few days, often get temporary lactose intolerance after a bug.
