Recurrent croup in 10 year old

Can anyone give me advice on recurrent croup? My dd is now 10 and has always suffered from a croupy cough. She gets it almost immediately she gets any minor sniffles. It's generally relieved by drinking water and sitting by an open window as with normal croup. The doc gave her an inhaler and suggested taking it before bed but I'm not sure it does much good. After a bad night last night I gave her some of her inhaler before bed and within half an hour she had started barking. Should I keep hassling the doctor and try for an ENT referral perhaps? Any other thoughts on what causes this and whether I can do anything about it?

What colour is the inhaler?

DD used to be prone to croup, the last episode occurring when she was 11. I was told that she had a reactive airway and I found that the brown inhaler, which is a preventative, helped enormously.

It's a blue one, she doesn't have a brown one so maybe I should ask for one.

My ds is 5 and has recurrent severe croup that needs steroids each time. We are seeing an ENT doctor this week. We also don't have a brown inhaler .

I was just about to post an identical thread. my DD (nearly 3) was hospitalized last night for the 5th time with croup. she was seen by a consultant who has told us she needs to be seen by an ENT specialist... so that's a battle I need to have with our GP. I wasn't sure it was necessary but I can't cope with the thought of it still happening when she's 10!!

I was wondering if we'd be able to get a dosage of the steroids to keep at home because she responds really well with them...?

We have the steroids at home but we have been under a respiratory professor since 8 weeks old. On also a doctor so don't know if they were more amenable to it but has really helped cut down the hospital trips which were breaking us.

Thanks, I think a trip to the doc is in order. We've been lucky enough that no hospitalisation has been required despite 30+ episodes of croup.

My DS is 9 and has had recurrent croup for as long as I can remember. Gets it about 4 times a year, first few times he was admitted to hospital for steroids but now the doctor gives me them in advance. He hasn't seen any ENT specialist, they just know he responds well to Dexamethasone and know by now that I know the symptoms so I know when to give it to him. So it's worth asking your doctor Teenage.
