My Daughter has just turned one but for a few months now when she is in her highchair, on her trike or sitting on someone's knee she starts to grind/rub her bum in her nappy, she goes into a trance. She can be distracted and it doesn't last very long. I have had a text from her child minder to say it is something she would mention at her 12month review, which is tomorrow. I have now google'd it and some sites say it can be a sign of autism although she isn't showing any other traits and as I say she can be distracted from doing it............Any ideas anyone?! Should I mention it tomorrow?

I did read that somewhere too, I have ignored it for this long because I thought personally that it may be like when you have an itch an it just feels nice so didn't want to draw too much attention to it because I didn't want to make her think things like that were wrong and cause problems further down the line.

Dd is 2.5 and still does this. She is constipated (constant issue they think is related to being prem). One thought I've had suggested its the trance could be epilepsy - I don't think it is but I am going to mention it to gp. Dd does a wriggle rather than rubbing herself. Now she can talk she has told me her tummy feels odd so I think she's just very sensitive and can feel the poo moving iyswim.

Hi, Thanks for the replies. She is just 12 months old, Her Dad and I had a chat about it last night and it always seems to be when she is tired, google did tell me that it could be a soothing thing along with many other reasons. She had her 12 month health and development review this morning and I mentioned it to the HV and she also said she had known it as an alternative way to self soothe. Although motherofdragons she can get constipated from time to time and hadn't had her bowels open yesterday then had a very hard poo this morning so I did also consider that so was glad to see your post. HV said as long as she snaps out of the "trance" then it is nothing to worry about which has made me feel better, Ill just keep my eye on it.

It feels nice to her, simple as that!

I know ALOT of children who do this!

Very normal behaviour
