Non-existant little toe nail at birth, now at 4.5yo is just an odd little blob of nail

Does anyone on here know anything about this? DD3 didn't have a nail at all at first on her left-hand little toe.

It sort of grew after a few months, like a little tiny pearl at first, and now we basically have to cut it off when it gets too blobby and starts to catch on socks. It has never grown in the conventional way- it's more of a little sphere of nail iyswim. Is there any chance of this nail ever being "normal" do you think? Do we need to take her to see someone about it, and if so, what if anything can be done?

Just like mine, and my dad's and grandad's. I am pretty sure my nephew has it too. Not much you can do about it really!

Me too! I hardly have any toe nails on either of my little toes

Ah! I wondered if I'd find any grown-ups on here with it. How do you manage your toenail? Do you just have to cut it really short all the time? DD's seems to catch on socks all the time and is really bothering her.

Mine too! Nothing to be done about it

Yes, always cut right down - you can't see that I have any nail most of the time

I've got this as well, both little toes.
The nail is like a wee clump that just grows up the way.
Can be quite tricky to cut.

Mine are like this too. I have reasonably titchy feet for my height anyway and very high arches. Toes are very small, little toe barely a nub with a speck of nail on it. Bummer for nail polish but otherwise not a problem.

I'm in the strange tiny little toe nail gang too. We are the chosen ones.

Me too! Always been like that. Just cut it very short...mine is barely 2mm at its longest.

I remember it did annoy me as a child...my mum used to tape over it sometimes with surgical tape, just to keep me quiet!

Mine are the same. Annoys me when I wear sandals and have 4 painted toenails and one painted stub.

I've got small feet for my height too! And I was born with talipes feet (club foot) too, though all corrected early on with physio.

All my toes are small. I like them and think other people have weird gangly toes...yuk!

Haha yes me to Gin I usually joke at the salon about getting a discount on my pedicure as nothing to paint.

Me too... Sorry nothing useful to add. At least I only managed to pass them to one of my kids.

I have four children, who all have my DH's stupid turned up toenails that eat socks. At least no 4 will eat 10% fewer socks...

I have this too. I think it is a new stage of evolution. Grin

I have it too OP...on my right little toe. It's a pain as I have to sort of slice the top off it to keep it down! Grin It wears through socks but causes no harm. I also have a bent little finger...which my Irish Nan said was the sign of those with the "Gift" but today is said to be a sign of Autism!

Glad to report that DH managed to file the nail blob last night when she was asleep!

DS is 20mo and his toe nails are all a bit weird! Little toes nails are basically a crease of nail. The nails on the middle toes grow thick and rounded and a little bit yellowy. GP said that babies toes can be odd and not to worry! I just make sure his shoes and socks always fit so I know it's nothing that I've caused

Mine are just like lines of nail which I can periodically pull off completely. Nice to know I'm not alone in with my bodily oddity.

She can have my extra one.
I have two toenails on my pinky toes, I have to keep one very short or it catches.

Ooh, a club I can join! I have never painted toe nails because of these little odd nails - I let them get as long as possible but they just turn upwards and catch so get snipped off again.

Not quite the same, but dd big toe nail keeps dropping off Hmm

She and I also have fairly insignificant small toe nails.

GotMyGoat · 26/03/2014 21:11

yep - mine is ridiculous, like a grain of rice on the end of my toe, dd has it too - and it has fallen off a few times. it's just genetics :)

Me too, in spite of the fact that my feet are otherwise things of beauty! I find it easiest to deal with them using a toenail clipper rather than nail scissors.
