Scarlet Fever

Hi,

My 4 yr old DD has just been diagnosed with scarlet fever and been given a course of antibiotics along with pain killers.

Should I inform the school in the morning? I have no clue as she is my eldest and not been through this before but I understand it's very contagious and from reading other threads on here, parents expect to be informed when there is an outbreak.

I need to ring reception first thing and let them know don't I? I'm so busy worrying and trying not to scare myself silly on Google that I can't think straight Grin

TIA Smile

Yes you do, and keep her off school. Hope she feels better soon.

Yes, I would just ring the school first thing and explain. Hope your DD starts to feel better soon.

Yes, ring school - but I think after 24 hours of antibiotics your DD should be fine to go in (or at least not contagious).

Hi. Sorry to hear your lo is not well. Can I ask what the symptoms are? Apparently 4 or 5 schools where I live have had outbreaks of scarlet fever in the last month or so. It's been in the local papers but never mentioned the symptoms. Hope she feels better soon.

It is a notify able disease so her school will need to inform the health protection agency, but once your dd has had antibiotics for 24 hours she will be able to go back to school if she feels well enough.

There must be a lot of it about at the moment. We had a letter from the school about it last week. Hope your LO is better soon, OP.

Hi my little one is off nursery with Scarlett fever at the moment. Our doctor said they would inform the nursery/school - but I also rang them just in case. It's non contagiousness after 24 hrs on antibiotics, but my doctor advised we keep her at home for 5 days.

Thanks for all your replies. After one day of antibiotics she was so much better! Three more days and the rash had completely gone too Smile

I informed the school, the receptionists response was "and?" Hmm But she's back tomorrow so maybe I will double check that everything was okay with her teacher.

Thanks again Smile
