Itchy/sore vulva in dd (6)

For the last year or so, dd (6) has periodically (maybe once every 3 months) had pain and itching around her vulva/labia. (Never any pain/itching around anus). It has woken her up screaming at night: on one occasion dh and I took her to walk-in centre at 11pm as she was so distressed. Walk-in centre and previous GP visits have revealed no cause: there's no discharge (so not thrush?), and urine sample was normal (although she sometimes says that wee-ing is painful). The area never looks partic red/sore. After reading some previous posters' experiences here, I've used Ovex to treat for threadworms and in the past that seems to have resolved the issue, although I have never seen one on her genital area. We're in the middle of another episode now, however, and Ovex doesn't appear to have helped.

Spoke to pharmacist who suggested Canesten, which I've been trying since Mon. However dd in tears with soreness this morn (she says itching is better?) and I am worried have aggravated the area. Sudocrem doesn't seem to help.

Have made a GP appt for later but in meantime was wondering if anyone else had any knowledge/experience of this, and what helped, incl good cream for soothing the area.

I should add: no changes re soap/washing machine stuff lately. She wears pjs but no knickers in bed, although often has skirt/tights at school. Knickers are always cotton. I normally use a drop of v mild bubble bath in her bath, but nothing else - no soap on area ever. We have previously washed her hair in the bath. Have stopped bubbles and hair washing in tub to no avail, although it might be a bit soon to see results?

Apols for epic post!

Is she wiping properly? I've noticed this in a little girl who jumps straight off the loo and pulls up her knickers, no tissue.

Make sure she wipes gently and maybe a baby wipe too.

If nothing else is working you should really see GP again.

I wondered about wiping too, but after the last episode I really encouraged her re this and afaik she's fairly reliable now. GP appt is later today ...

Daktacort really helped my dd (anti fungal and hydrocortisone) and sometimes cutting out v acidic food like tomatoes can help

Sorry, didn't notice GP appt was today. Hope they sort her out quickly.

I've found that sometimes Daktarin, an athletes foot cream, works better than canesten, even though it's not prescribed for thrush routinely. Maybe a slightly different variation of the fungus?

But see what they say later.

Thanks again. Am keeping fingers crossed for GP... Previously they've not px'd anything as there were no signs of an issue, eg discharge/redness

Try sitting her in a bowl of bicarb and warm water . We had something similar with Dd who is just 8. Last summer we reckon it was the change in water possibly chlorine in the pool and she was in screaming distress. Bicarb and warm water solved it . Twice a day . Then whenever it started again we did this. We have a bidet so it was easier but even a washing basin or even a bath.
