Quick advice needed, DS has bitten through his lip...

He fell off the sofa (mucking about with dd) he has a deep cut on the top of and underneath his lip and blood bruising to his gum at the top (he only has one of his big front teeth through at the moment).

I know there is nothing to do about the cut on his lip but it's the one underneath I am concerned about, it's just under 1 cm wide.

If I could post a pic I would!

Should I take him to A and E to get it steri-stripped?

I would go to A and E just to get it checked. When I was about 7 I was running in Tesco (unbeknownst to my mum!) and tripped, biting badly through my lip. Their first aider just helped to rinse my mouth out but I've had quite a bad scar there- raised lump- ever since and it should have had a stitch or similar really.

Hope your DS feels better soon, I remember it was very sore.

As it's Saturday & A&E will be packed might be worth ringing nhs direct, if they think it needs steri stripping they might be able to make you an appt with ooh, save you waiting. Worth a go anyway! If it makes you feel any better I did something similar myself couple of years ago (my horse smacked me in the face!) and all i did was keep it clean & it heeled up fine. Just had to drink through a straw for a few days!

If the cut is within the actual lip area they probably won't do anything.

If it's in the normal skin (ie not the pink lip) they may well do something.

Vague I know, but may help you decide.

And IME A and E probably won't be packed yet , until the sports injuries and drunks start rolling in.

Do you have a minor injuries clinic nearby?

My dd did this at 3 yrs, blood spurting everywhere. Got her to clinic 10 mins away. By time we were seen it had started closing in on itself. But was good to get checked over.

Thankfully due to position it just missed needing plastic surgery - which I wouldn't have even thought about!? So I would recommend getting it seen to regardless.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone. We went to minor injuries and they glued the cut under his lip. He has nurse's orders to eat lots of ice lollies so he's quite happy Grin

My little boy did this and has a lump of scar tissue in his lip too, which doesn't seem to be going away. Worth going in case they can help you avoid the same x
